I've used walnuts on furniture scratches and it worked out well. Also used it on an old shotgun stock when it fell off a gun rack and suffered its first scratch. We celebrated our 50th in late August. We beat TFoley to it by just a few weeks, in August 1971.
We've now been married for almost 20 happy years. 😃

Reminds me of a pal of mine, talking about his marriage - 'yup', he remarked, 'ten years of wedded bliss!' When did you get married then, Ken? 'Oh, 1974.'

There are English Walnuts and Black Walnuts. It is the Black Walnut hull that you would want to use. Yes they will stain your fingers as well. Wait till they get dark and they will come off the nut easier. I have heard that if you trap to get a bunch of the Black Walnut hulls put them in water bring it to a boil and then put your new traps in, let them boil for a while, then let the water cool down before removing, and it will darken the metal and make the steel more resistant to rust. I soak black walnuts in the hull in a 90% rubbing alcohol to make wood stain.
works great and will stain any wood including beach and birch without blotching.
