gotta agree, $350 is a bit stiff for this rifle. having said that, you can't beat T/C's guarantee/customer-service deal, and .54 cal is getting hard to find in ths model.

if you can talk the fellow down to the realm of reasonable, go for it!

He wants $350 for it. Is that fair?

For what its worth... RETAIL varies ALOT on geography... Here in Oregon that gun would RETAIL, out of a store, for $400.00 or more. "Back East" where muzzleloading is more popular guns seem to be cheaper.

You CAN buy good guns online less expensively, FYI.

Anyway... I hear about $200.00 guns but have NEVER found one in MY state (worth having) so there you go.

Not the same thing.

Nobody thinks it's worth $350.

The fact that most think it's worth about what it sold for new is a plus for the gun, but it's not worth almost twice what it sold for.

Is gas worth what it sold for in the 70's? Maybe a bit more, but not what we're paying for it. We all know we're being screwed.

No sense in getting screwed on a gun too.

I love the 54 cal Renegade I've hunted with since the mid-1980's. Most reliable gun in the battery. Shoots well with both ball and bullet. Elk die within 50 yards if I do may part and put the bullet just behind the shoulder and a third of the way up from the belly line. Over the years it has received sling swivels, a new crown, tuning trigger and lock, and stock refinishing after one particularly rough drag out where I fell on it twice.

Suggest you check out the barrel condition, tho' if the owner is a gun person it is likely okay. Bring your own range rod with 54 jag and heavy patch, see if there are any tight or loose spots.

Make an offer of, say $250 and ask for a first right of refusal. After the rifle has taken up shelf space for a while you just might get it.

I thought i bought my Renegade in the early 70s but looking thru my Gun Digests it didn't show up there until 1976 and was priced at $165. I paid $125 for mine new, still have it still shoots great.Hawkens and Senecas were $175 when TC first sold them.

Re the price, way too high, at least where i live.
I just bought a Ruger M77 in .270 with a 3x9 scope
& sling and a Renegade .54 both in like new condition for $350 for both. At local gun shows
i see TC Hawkens going for $250 or less.

I say do your best to find a good Renegade. I paid 25 cash for mine and havent been happier. Took my first deer with it last year and plan to stuff more in the freezer for many more years to come.

I am expecting a call back for another one here in a bit for 75 cash out the door. The deals are out there. There are a handful of T/Cs in my local paper as we speak anywhere from 75 to 300. The one for 300 has a brand new drop in Green Mountain barrel included with it. The rest of them are in the 125 to 150 range. If money was better they would all come home with me but the wife only lets me spend 100 at a time. Good luck with your search, Jeremiah.

I've had one offered to me for $250. I'm waiting for pictures.

I'm also thinking of another .54 GPR in LH model.

The traditional side of me is strong. I'm also considering a flintlock, but i'd have to buy 5lbs of 4F for it. I won't live long enough to use that much primer powder.

Besides Capper won't work for a name anymore. :haha:

I bought a used TC Hawken for $270 in almost virgin condition. You can still see the machining marks from when they cut the rifling. 350 for a renegade is dreaming in technicolor.

Most places will let you mix grain sizes. If not, get 5 pounds of FFFg for prime and main charge. If you get a .54 GPR flinter, we can always call you Flint :rotf:
