Counteracting forces. Like all natural organic materials, internal consistencies are going to be variable within each piece, and variable from one to the other. The more the laminations, the less effect each piece will have on the total finished part.
 
I was given a 70's era muzzleloader a couple months ago. Typical slab sided thing of the era. I pulled the barrel and lock off of it and ran the stock through the band saw a couple times to fit in my fire wood stack. I have the barrel inlet into a nice stock now. I'll make a lehigh barn gun out of it this winter.
