I had an oppertunity to handle and examine an original 1777 French musket with bayonet a few days ago. It is in such good shape that when I first saw it from acrossed the room I thought it was a new replica. Even the wood looked new, not oil soaked. It is part of a collection that that is being sold as the owner, a retired military officer, passed away and the estate in being settled.
I hope I get the chance to take some pictures, especially of the markings to keep for reference.
