French Double Barrel Flintlock Fowler ca. 1750s-1770
In overall excellent, untouched original flintlock condition. Fine quality, 35 1/2", octagonal to round, smoothbore, pin-fastened, browned, .60 caliber (20 ga.) barrel with extensive gold inlay on the breech and around the silver fore-sight (light wear). The top of the barrel with a large gold "Canon Tordu" marking. Retains an untouched age patina with 95%+ original brown finish, some light discoloration and 90%+ gold. Molded and carved, nicely figured, burl Walnut halfstock of classic French rococo design. The butt with a sculpted and fluted comb, a delicate wrist and extensive floral relief carvings around the barrel tang and the mounts. Finely engraved steel mounts with 90%+ original brown finish and some scattered light discoloration. The trigger-guard with a deeply chiseled bow and an embossed urn finial. The butt-plate with matching engravings and an embossed finial. Three (3) baluster-turned ramrod pipes, with matching smooth surfaces and a deeply embossed silver wrist-escutcheon with a Boar's Head finial. Fine quality locks with choice untouched surfaces, 90%+ original polish and fine line engraving. In mechanically excellent order with all their original components and clearly marked, under the bridled powder-pans with a "J. Lamotte fils aine" maker's signature and with a St. Etienne address. Jean Louis Lamotte worked in St. Etienne, France 1747-1791, was the son of Joseph Lamotte and was known for his hunting weapons. (please see E. Heer's: "Der Neue Stockel" vol. 1, pg. 677). In overall excellent untouched condition. The barrels with 95%+ original brown finish, sharp contours and 90%+ of their extensive gold damascening. Excellent stock with a highly figured, burl, grain pattern, extensive floral-relief carvings and 97%+ finish. The locks retain 90%+ original finish with smooth surfaces, strong mainsprings and all their original components. An excellent example of a high quality Double Barrel French Flintlock Fowler, ca. 1750s. Made by a member of the prominent "Lamotte" family. Complete with its original wooden ramrod. Overall length, 50 1/8". For a similar example, please see C. Blaire's: European & American Arms 1150-1850
