A friend has bought a percussion rifle in Germany that is marked "Garrett USA." It is a nice looking Hawken. Anybody know anything about this maker?

I have not seen one of their Hawkins, but the German made "Garret USA" Sharps carbines were some of the best made. They even had a function pellet primer system which none of the current repros offer.

I've had a Garret Sharps carbine in 50/70 since 1982. Its a very good shooter and shows excellent workmanship.

I googled around today thinking the Sharps manufacturer might be the same outfit. But I don't think so. Apparently, a gentleman named Garrett had an Italian firm make good quality Sharps rifles for him to import. Later, the Italians dropped out and sold the machinery to Pedersoli.

charlie garret had some of the first sharps imports they were well made but just a few years ahead of their time.

i talked to him at a gun show some years ago he said the .50-70 carbines are hard to find he only had 100 of them made. mine is #54 it too shoots very good.

No. The Sharps used a proprietary pellet ignition system. They also could use common percussion caps.

a friend has a replica purdey .54 rifle it says garret USA on the barrel and made by pedersoli italy.
Bernie
