mollases, corn, barley and sorgum grains. I used to raise rabits and mixed some hog feed in. It smelled so good had to taste it....plain and needed salt. Cooked up a bowl and it was tasty...fibery and can help with constipation. I used to carry some for an eary morning mush while trecking. Its mostly the same basis for 'horse bread'.

Dear Lord Tenngun! Well, I'm just glad you didn't have to steal it like that poor old widower. 'course, he did it out of desparation, necessity -- you just chose to eat grits.

Have any selfies from YOUR historically-correct trek!? LOL

I love to eat gizzards and several other organ meats and find them to be delicious.....but not all organ meats. I like gizzards, hearts, livers and thoroughly cleaned intestines when they are used as sausage casings. But, I won't eat lungs, kidneys, thymus glands(sweet breads) nor other bits of offal. We were poor when I was growing up but never so poor that we had to fight the buzzards, armadillos and 'possoms for those parts so I never developed a taste for them. At least something good came from my childhood poverty.

venison steak and kidney pie. you don't know what you're missing.
smaller game kidneys are good fryed like the livers. and hearts.

"venison steak and kidney pie. you don't know what you're missing"

Oh yes I do. A friend recommended it to me one time and I tried it. I cleaned the kidneys just as he told me and made the venison and kidney pie. It was like what I would imagine eating a pot pie from a urinal would taste like. I just don't like the taste of kidneys. The Brits like them and you like them......y'all can have all you want, leave me out. :shake: :shake: :shake:

UM...did your friend tell you to "boil the pee out of them?" That's what you must do..., you don't simply remove the interior tissues, and I don't blame any cook who refuses to process kidneys for cooking, as raw they must be boiled a long time and it stinks. :haha:

Yep, did all of that and it made the kitchen smell like a bus station restroom. I just don't have a sweet tooth for pee. :barf:
