Muzzie,
I'm currently building my first longrifle and I've been using books by Dixon and Alexander. I followed the Dixon book's logical instructions for laying out the rifle and inletting all functional parts (barrel, lock, trigger, ramrod pipes, butt plate, etc). All this was done while the blank was still "squared". In my opinion, the Dixon book is short on guidance to the novice builder when it comes to the crucial point of actually taking that block of maple and turning it into longrifle with all of its beautiful lines/curves. That's where the Alexander book came in for me. He provides a huge amount of detail(pictures, drawings) on how to shape all elements of the stock.
