Correct on every point! I've been in the firearms related industry for over 35 years and have seen this same scenario time and time again. I've known many over the years who would barely keep enough ammo to keep their carry piece loaded. These same folks make a trip to the grocery about every other day and rarely fill up their tank.

for 30 years I bought enough ammo to shoot on the weekends storing just a little. you did not have to be a selfish glutton and stockpile giant amounts. I would get a pound of BP at a time. waited until it was 3/4 gone and got another but that was before the boomers retired en masse with all the time money and the internet where a clic gets you a gun store type delivery to your door. an example is the guy hear who got 50lb keg of BP and wont even live long enough to use it. there are millions like him

50LB!? Holy cow sir, I'm glad I live no where near you! How long does it take to go through that? Do you have a magazine for that kinda powder?

Sadly, 50# is all we are allowed to legally own....It is a trick sometimes juggling quantity to make room for new powder. As for storage, do as the regulations require.

I go though twice that on a normal year. I average 3 orders a year and just go pick it up. Cannon and large bore (72cal) eat a lot even for mostly blanks.
For my personal shooting live fire and hunting, I go though 7 to 10# of it each year.

So you use a a pound here and there, big deal, why would think everyone has the same shooting habits, I shoot several flintlocks, rifles and smooth bores, I also reload a few different cartridges and also shotgun shells with real black powder, how long do you think a pound would last me, don’t be ignorant, some use more than others, not that it matters anyway, nothing is stopping you from buying an extra pound, stop whining, in fact, I think I’ll order ten more pounds this morning and start shooting my 10 gauge a lot more.

One assumes folks here know their state/county/city laws on black powder storage. The feds limit is 50 pounds on a domicile premises.
As I’m never below 4 to 5 pounds ordering 50 is not feasible, me being a law abiding citizen and all.

Then I would move to a state that follows Federal guidelines not some idiot state like CA who allows only 1#, heck, that's only 4 shots in the small cannon.

When I shoot my Mountain Rifle (one pounder/rifled bore) I average 8 rounds per pound, so 50 lbs would only last about 400 rounds if I stretch it. I load everything vintage cartridges. That doesn't include the front stuffers and C&B revolvers. With the Mountain Rifle, I'll shoot on average about 5 lbs (40 shots) in blanks on New Years Eve and special occasions like the Marine Corps Birthday. A friend over the mountain is in an artillery reenactment group and has his own 3" Parrott Ordnance Rifle. He burns up 1 lb. with each shot. They take it down to Camp Shelby, MS, to their artillery range and fire at 8' ft X 16' ft plywood targets, pretty darn accurate at 1,000 yds. So in closing, there are a lot of people who use up a lot of powder in a years time, just depends how active they are in shooting and what they are shooting.

you must have a lot of fun blasting away like that but it seems the good times are coming to an end sadly

Black powder does not “ detonate “ in a fire unless it is confined in a very strong container that will not rupture easily such as military ammo cans, concrete boxes that are full, etc. lightly constructed plywood enclosures are good. Containers that break open or rupture easily make a “ WHOOSH “. Strong, heavily constructed containers go “ KABOOM “. You want the “ WHOOSH “.
The car in your garage with a full tank of gas is potentially more destructive in a fire than a large amount of any kind of gunpowder, if the gunpowder is stored properly. So is the aforementioned propane tank close to your house or shop.

Excellent, great insight. My powdwr is stored in a handcrafted wooden box in a safe place in the stand alone garage.

I wouldn't be surprised. I contacted Maine Powder House the morning after the news about GOEX first hit as I live 2 towns away from them, they had 70 orders come in overnight and doubted they had enough to fill them all.

Actually the Federal limit is 50 lbs. total per individual for sporting, recreational, educational purposes...., whether you have it in a dwelling or not. Folks should not think that 50 lbs. in the shed at home, and 50 lbs. in the shed at work is OK.....
