I had been having trouble getting my GPR to hit anything with any consistancy, I was using, I know, Pyrodex. Shots hit one place then another and so on a whim after reading about Goex so many times, I tried some of the FFG I had and the gun loved it. It hits around the outer edge of the bullseye. I'm not going to change anything until I get used to my new glasses (another story), trying the trifocals without the lines. Anyway, a friend at work suggested that I change from FFG to FFFG Goex, he said I could use less powder to get the same results. I shot the GPR for about 3-4 hours and have a pretty good sized bruise on my arm. He said if I used the FFFG, it would put less pressure (kick) on my arm and get the same results. Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance................Harold

I shoot Pyro P, Pyro RS, Goex 2f and Goex 3f in both my 50 GPR and my 54 GPR. I just don't notice a whole lot of difference between them accuracy-wise. All perform well with the right patch/ball/lube combo and all perform about the way you describe when something is out of whack in my patch/ball/lube combo.

How do your recovered patches look?

For my 50 the right combo is a .490 RB with a pillow ticking patch. With the 54 it's a .530 ball with a ticking patch. Any decent lube works well, but a poor one doesn't.

On the arm bruising, I'm not surprised if you are nestling it into the crook of your arm and shoulder like a conventional rifle. Move it out onto your arm a little and away from the shoulder, and the bruising is gone. I shoot lots of hunting loads in either rifle with no discomfort or bruising whatsoever.

The one difference I do notice between Goex and Pyro is in the nipple fouling. I can only go half a dozen shots with either Pyro before I get a slight delay between the pop of the cap and ignition of the powder. I've never had that happen with the Goex, even after more than 20 shots. It's an easy preventive fix with the Pyro (just pick the nipple every three or four shots), and good to know if you get in a situation where you don't have access to the Goex.

Patches look good, not burnt other than the dark ring around the ball, the edges look good, a little frayed, but not down too far. I'm using Stumpy's moose snot for lube.....I had it on my arm, but I think too far out......hurts but fun was had......

Everything sounds right to me, so I'd say your gun just prefers Goex. You might try it all again once you get accustomed to the new glasses, but I doubt that much will change.

But as for differences in recoil between the powders, I've never noticed anything. Try skooching that butt plate out your arm a bit to see if that doesn't take care of the bruising.

I appreciate the info BrownBear, I'm going to be in your state in a week for a few days, wife told me we were going on a big boat (cruise) to Alaska.......

Hi Harold,
Which range are you shooting at? Ione or Woodland? I have shot at both. I use to be a member of the Yolo Front Loaders at the range in Woodland. A lot of nice guys there that are knowledgable in black powder. That is one thing I do miss about California.

I shoot at Woodland, I'm a member of the Yolo Sportman's Assoc. Nice little range and have seen the "Frontloaders" and talked to them for a minute at one of their monthly shoots, seem very knowledgable, one older guy came over another time and really helped me when I first started, showed me how to undo a "dryball".....so I would know how to do it when I had the dreaded "dryball" show up......

If you can get in with the Yolo Front Loaders, DO SO! When I first met them, I was a young fellow stumbling around with my .54 GPR percussion. I was shooting Pyrodex, store bought balls, patches and lube. These guys introduced me to the world of casting, Goex, making my own lube, patches and eventually, flintlocks. Ever so often, they put in a large powder order for club members. I really liked Yolo. Have fun and happy shooting  .

Thanks I appreciate it............planning on trying to meet them and attend some of their meetings after our vacation.........

Just got back from an Alaska cruise yesterday (Saturday.) Was our second one up there in three years. I'd LOVE to live in or around Anchorage. Wife loves visiting Alaska, too, but ain't none too keen on living there. Should have dragged her there 25 years ago. Too late now I suppose.

Trust you had a great trip.

The Inside Passage is very smooth. You may well not feel any motion at all. Ahhhhh...but out in the open Pacific it can get a bit ahhhhhhh...lively? You'll do just fine, I am sure. However, I must say, you appear to be an adventurous sort - seasick from the toilet bowl, yet willing to tackle the high seas? Trust me, you'll be well pleased with Alaska. There are few places on earth quite like it. Of course, you will encounter all the usual tourist junk in every port (every port but Icy Straight Point if you go there. Very rustic, very native, very simple, very real. So sad they built a zip line there the past year - so, utterly lame. A real shame.) Again, other than possibly witnessing the zip line, I trust you will have an enjoyable cruise. I honestly do wish I could live there. Great people in Alaska, friendly and down-to-earth. Enjoy!
