Had to restart the computer when I remembered this must visit stop: Great Sand Dunes National Park between Denver and Albuquerque near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Take your shoes off and wade in tall sand dunes that stretch for miles. Easy camping available.

Random notes:
Memphis has a big glass pyramid. Inside is the Ducks Unlimited museum (forget the precise name) as well as a Bass Pro Shop and motel. I've only heard of this but might be worth looking up.

If your route down the Mississippi takes you to Yazoo City, definitely stop to look at the USS Cairo museum. It is an excavated "Merrimack" type ironclad that was sunk there in the ACW.

While in the SW you maycwant to see Meteor Crater and the Anasazi cliff dwelling ruins at Mesa Verde. Incidentally March was a good time to be there while it's relatively cool and uncrowned.

Damn but there is a lot of empty space between things out that way.

Around Yellowstone, there is a pretty cool museum in Grand Teton. Lots of beadwork. I think it was called Moose Bay but the name is hazy.

Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman is worth a stop to gawk at dinosaurs.

Don't forget to get your NPS Golden Passport or whatever the senior lifetime pass is. You will be hitting a LOT of national parks!

When your there at the tip.of Michigan , by the big bridge . .. stop and visit Fort Michilicamackinaw . A lot of history there . Have fun !

This is a worthwhile stop. I have family tree members documents showing their birth at Fort Michilimackinac in 1761.
My family has been in Michigan even earlier but records only started there and continue to this day.

While in Yellowstone drive if you have time drive the Beartooth Highway between Cooke City and Red Lodge Mt a beautiful drive. X2 on the National Parks Golden Age pass.

If you want to visit the Sharps plant in Cody, make sure you make arrangements ahead of time. They also have a large gun shop there. Cody was one of the most friendliest town toward military. I took the same trip except I left from NY and went the opposite way. Do not forget Montana, it is quite a site. Spend time in the Cody Museum, I spent two days walking around.
