Time to get 2007 kicked off right!

Begrudgingly unloaded the two big hunting boxes from the blazer...(but they're just inside the garage door :winking: )...so I can load up the range boxes and start back shooting this weekend...50cal Flinter, use up some more of those "Cheapshot" cast balls on a steel hanger.

Supposed to be 25* when I leave the house Saturday morning but a 45,000 BTU radiant heater on top of a 20lb propane tank will make it like a summer morning.

Anybody getting out this weekend !

Was out last weekend, 18* and breezy. BRRRRRR
Got off about a dozen shots before I had to run back down to the house and sit in front of the wood stove. Supposed to be a high of 8* here on friday. Primative biathalon in a few weeks so this weekend I will probably run up the hill take a few shots and run back down regardless of the weather, gotta get in shape. Have Fun

Glad to here you're getting back out!
I went out last weekend thankfully, had to come home to crisis with mom inlaw, age, memory and such.Have not venhad the time to properly clean my guns, but get about 2 minutes each morning to wipe the bores and run borebutter up and down. pretty cleaned up now.
but the shoot last weekend went fairly well. my 50 yd group was a litter bigger than normal, butstill figuring the .40 barrel out. reduced the load for 25 yd to 25 gr and wasable to do 5 shot groups inside of silver dollar sized groups and the handgun went 9 into the 10 ring and 1 claimed flyer! hope your session goes as well!

shoot true!

Brett

Will get out this weekend and try to take a redfox with my .54 Investarm Hawken. In Bavaria we have snow since 3 days and about -7 degrees centigrade.Further more I met my BP-colleges at the range for some ML shooting. Have to sight in my new Lyman sight, test around with my new GPR and try the handling of my new speedloaders. Finally we try some new hunting target competitions with ML.

Hey Roundball:
It's good to hear you'll be getting. I didn't even know NC got temps that cold. Is it rare or fairly common??
I'm still reliant on crutches :cursing: and with a foot of snow and temps in the teens I guess I'll be hunkerin down close to the woodstove. I'll be thinkin of you though as I'm sippin my hot chocolate.
good luck to ya.

A 25 lb propane tank and 45 000 BTU's and Black Powder....you morning at the Range sounds as if it could be a Blast.... :winking:
Is that as cold as it gets in NC?

I'm planing to get out for a rabbit hunt with my .50 hawkens bring the dog about 2 feet of snow and -20 celceous or -10/11 ferenhite. Got to keep moving to stay warm but good exersize. Mabe I will even see a rabbit instead of just trackes :winking: , well anyone getting out have fun, Regards Dave T.

This has actually been a mild winter (for the whole east coast)...but 20's & 30's are generally our nightime norms for wintertime in central NC...with the occasional week or two where it'll dip into the teens at night...it's unusual to get down into single digits.

There is no open flame that I can see...maybe there is behind a tightly woven screen mesh that blocks it from view, dunno...but there's no danger...it's a long ways back from the shooting bench...the heat will project forward a good 15-20 feet so I mount the unit on top of the tank, set it on the floor several feet behind me and it throws a big wall of heat all around my area...can't wear a coat or cap or I get over heated...turn around every 15 minutes or so and warm the hands, etc...the thing really puts it out...got it at Home Depot several years ago

Hey Kirrmeister;

Good luck on your fox hunt. Are you using a predator call to get him close enough for a shot?

Mike in Wisconsin

Lucky you. I have to drive 55 miles to get to a range with benches, but just 25 to get to a campsite on private land where I can do informal plinking. I use the hood of my truck as a 'rest' when working on accuracy/checking loads but do lots of 'off-hand' practice at around 30-40 yards.I enjoy camping this time of year as long as the dern wind isn't kicking up, that's what hurts me. Otherwise build the campfire up (I take a small chain saw) and get the stew/chili cooking!

Roundball,

I shot last weekend in a rendezvous near home. Kinda cold for California but the sun was shining. This rondy is called "FreezeArse." And those who spent the night DID! GW

spose to be pretty cold here in Iowa this weekend, I think I heard a high of 18 degrees. Might drive about a mile out of town to a friends place, (who is allso into muzzleloading) has a shop, with a sliding window and shooting bench set up inside, outside is a 50 yard backstop, says I can come shoot anytime, did I mention the shop is heated? flinch

I'll be shooting my own gun for the first time this weekend, Suposed to be in the mid 60s and lows in the 30s. Had snow here at the beginning of the week. Interesting weather here in Southern Arizona.

Mike

Hey there Roundball,

I know what you mean about starting 2007 off right. We will be having our annual "Cold Toes" event this weekend in Fuquay-Varina south of Raleigh and I"m hoping it won't be too cooold. :shocked2: Temps during the day are supposed to be near 50 but at night we're looking at 25. We will be tenting it with lots of wool blankets. Perfect way to start off the shooting season although my daughter would perfere it to be a bit warmer so she can sleep in the hammock.

I sure wish that place was an hours drive closer...I'd join and shoot there every weekend...but a 3 hour round trip is just too much for me every week...hope you have a good time!

We got out for some target practice at the local range last weekend and plan to go out tomorrow and try some new patch/load combos suggested by folks on the board. Last weekend was in the 20's for highs with high winds, tomorrow around 30 light winds. We were going to go on friday but a high of 12 was too darn cold for me!

As usual Roundball and his talk of shooting got my motor running for a few shots. So,Early this morning just at Daybreak I loaded the Truck with a couple of Guns,My Faithfull Dog and Headed off to the Range. When I got there the Temp. was a Balmy -12 Celcius,Lyckily the wind that been hampering us the last few days had died down or it would have Felt like -25 or 30.I was Rugg though I had on my Kamik insulated pack Boots,Long Drozz,A TML Touque and a good pair of Rocky Gloves. It felt just like Summer....................Inside my Truck... :winking:
I took 50 or so shots with a gun that we aint allowed to talk about here....(It didn't load from the muzzle either) and then I took 15 shots with my Trusty Lyman Flintlock.A pre-cut ticking patch 018. Spit for lube, swaged Hornady Roundballs and a little heavier than I had been using load of 90 grains of 3f produced better hunting accuracy than I was used to.
After the shooting was over I let the ol'dog out and she Ran the range sniffing and hopping all around like she always does after we're done shooting. Then we piled back in the ol'Ford and headed home to clean my guns and have a good breakfast all of that Before 11am.
Heck of a way to start a day I'd say!

Sounds like a good outing...man, I don't know how people put up with weather that cold...summer must be on a weekend up there !!

I went again this morning and it was in the high 30's, light breeze, cloudy, but pleasant...a couple insulated shirts and I was good.

I really stink at shooting offhand standing so I'm dedicating this year's weekend range sessions to that...today I shot 50 - .490s at a 3" aim point sticker only 25yds as a starting point / confidence builder, and by the time I left I was getting 99% of them in there...next weekend I'll move the target out another 5yds and practice again...a great hobby, eh?

It is a Great hobby!I never had to swab the barrell once in 15 shots. No humidity here now I guess. How about you you need to patch between shots? If it's humid things must be getting grimey by the 50th shot?
