Good day for old guns

I got a call from a friend needing to get rid of his uncles stuff. I knew of his uncle who passed away 5 years ago. I didnt know he was into guns. I went over to check things out and came home with this stuff. I’m trying to figure out the caliber on the rifles. A .375 ball is too big. Was a good score.

Those are truly nice old rifles. Try a .35" ball if it's a .36; the .375 balls are for revolvers. I've just got to find some new friends!

I put a .32 Win Special round into the muzzle. Here is a pic of a .358 bullet.

The red box were the .375’s. I picked up a box of .310’s. We’ll see how they work.

People are paying collector prices for a new tin of caps. You would think that they were new old stock from the Civil War.

Trace around the bullet with a sharp pencil where it seats in the barrel, then mic that spot or just below it. Should give you a pretty close bore measurement.

My calipers showed the bore at just over .33 on both rifles. I’m shooting the 310’s tomorrow. I cant believe someone put the deer inlay on a .32.

That's a great haul, @T4halo1 ! There's some great stuff in that collection.

Regarding bore size, you can use the smooth shanks of fractional and letter-gauge drill bits as plug gauges to get a pretty good idea of your bore size. Try for the largest one that will "go," and then mike the shank to double check. This may save you some expense trying different balls.

I'll bet the caps and ammo are good. The last time I went to the range, I shot with some Alcan #12 caps my dad and I bought back in the sixties, using an old 1/4-28 nipple that was sized for them. They were as good as new. Maybe better than new, if some of the reports are true about faulty caps these days. If the caps in your collection were mine and the tins have been opened, I would not hesitate to use them. I would save the tins, though.

If Thats $500 worth of caps then I probably got over $1,000 worth of them. Dang I just might need to sell some so I can buy more parts. Haven't had a cap lock in probably 20 years.

Me too Salty. There are 18 nice #6’s in the box. I’ve got a nice Peters 10ga box from the same era. Old ammo boxes are pretty dang cool.
