I have chance to get a new Colt Navy 1851 steel frame 44 cal pistol made by Umberti for $165.

Is this a good starter pistol for newbie. Other pistol is a Traditions trapper 50 cal flint.

Also please let me know what support stuff I will need. I have 50 cal balls, patches etc for the Trapper and a T/C Omega 50cal.

Thanks,

Jim

That's a pretty good price for the '51 Colt Navy, I believe. It's not historically accurate, but I do have a lot of fun with mine. I feed it .454 round balls, 25 to 35 grains of 3Fg (Unless I do the filler thing - a whole 'nother topic), wonder wads, & #10 caps.

I can't speak to the trapper. I sure do love flint, though. I'm sure you'll have a blast no matter which you get. (Do you have a "persona"? That'd make the choice easier, I think.)

If that is INFACT a Uberti...GRAB it!
if it is functioning correctly....thats a Fantastic price that you wont find again!
look on the bottom right frame for the uberti
stamp,,,it is supposed to resemble the inside of a barrel....you will see a circle with a letter
"U" IN THE CENTER...
YOU CAN AWLAYS PICK UP A SINGLE SHOT LATER...

Uberti doesn't make a 51 in .44 only Pietta does. Cabela's sells the brass frame for 139.99 and the steel frame for 239.99.

For a good tutorial on starting black powder shooting, read the threads in this link:

I suggest the flintlock is not a good gun to start with. Flinters are great fun but require more effort to learn to shoot correctly. You'll learn faster and with less frustration if you start with percussion locks or revolvers.

It is a Perdosi not Uberti but both are known makers. 44 may not be accurate but that is what I got. Still in plastic. Now I have to learn how to use it. I will try the flint lock trapper I have first. I did the kit on that so should be a good start.

Can't be too hard. I have been knapping flint for starting fires and crude arrow heads for a year or so. Sparks like the 4th of July. Little high on firzzen but I will just back off the chip a little. Thanks for the advice.

Pedersoli is supposedly good quality, .44 isn't historically accurate but good shooters anyway. good luck with it!

Not sure who you mean by "Perdosi". But I can find no listing for a Navy Colt of any description made by Pedersoli. So it must be a Pietta. Still a good buy at that price.
