Does anyone have a video of what a good sparking steel should look like when struck with a piece of flint? Is there anyone on the forum (or elswhere who's contact info you would share) who makes or rehardens steels? I don't mind paying for a good product. I, like many of you am just trying to get the best that I can have to use...any help is appreciated!!! :hatsoff:

Lonehunter made a video of lighting a candle with flint and steel. Shows much spark. Contact him, or maybe someone can tell you how to bring it back up here.

necci, thanks for the post ... i've tried this a bunch of times, but the folding the bird's nest seems to confound me each time i do it.

You really gotta get it "fluffy" first.
Seems the key is to get plenty of air space in the tow or rope fibers or what ever your using for nest.
Drop the smoldering char/ember init and lightly/gently fold the nest around it.
Hold that glowing ember like it's a snowflake you don't want to crush or melt.
