This gun has been handed down through the family, but no one really knows much about it . I was hoping someone could give me some info about it.

Later percussion rifle, probably Southern. Experts aplenty on other sites might see a signature feature and nail it down.

The name on the lock is either the lockmaker or the hardware store that sold the lock. Look hard on the top flat of the barrel between the breech of the barrel and the rear sight for a name or initials, which would be the gunmaker.

You might also sign up with the American Longrifle Forum, the "ALR", and display these photos and anything you might find on the top flat. There are a number of experienced students of American longrifles and half-stock rifles that can shed light on perhaps, even the maker and his location.
