I built my GPR .50 percussion from kit several years ago. I replaced the trigger with one from TOW. I use the adjustable rear sight that came with the kit. Recently I've been trying to improve my off-hand skills. I usually shoot standing, off-hand at 100 yards with NRA 100 yard military rifle targets. At first, most of my target groups were around 12" for 5 shots, then 10" and more recently 8".

Well today I headed back to the range, shooting again at 100 yards. I fired several sighters to begin and found that the gun was shooting low, but on center. After shifting the rear sight a bit, my third sighter came just below the black. One more slight adjustment and I was in the black.

My next 6 shots were 2-9's, 2-10's, 1-10X and one 6. I pulled the 6 by accidentally firing before I was sighted in on target. Excluding the #6 flyer, that's a 5 shot group slightly over 4". My final shot was at a bowling pin hung at the 100 yard line. The shot was dead on and the pin went flying. Needless to say, I decided to quit on a high note. I know there are others out there that can do better, but for me and my 56 year old eyes, I'm one happy camper.

To all those considering thew Great Plains Rifle by Lyman, I say two thumbs way up! :hatsoff:

Good shooting! I could'nt even see that target at 100yards much less hit it off-hand. :( :( .

Pretty good shootin' there.

FWIW you might like the fixed sight better. I never really liked the factory adjustable rear sight on my GPR. It seemed to me that it moved around an awful lot. But I left it on there for a couple years anyway. Then I wanted to shoot in some matches that didn't allow adjustable sights so I switched to the factory primitive rear. MUCH better sight picture to my eye and it stays put exactly where you put it. I wished I had put it on sooner. If you have the fixed sight give it a try. You just might like it as much as I do.

Jethro,

I've thought about the fixed sight as well. I might take you advice and make the move. The adjustable is really flimsy, not very authentic and doesn't hold very well.

Thanks for the advice!

I agree with the fixed sight, changed mine out and I'm right on at 100 yards with my load if I do my part. Still breaking in the barrel so it may change?

I won several matches with my old .54 GPR percussion and adjustable rear sight. When I retired, my wife bougght me a .54 GPR flint kit. On the flinter, I installed the fixed primitive rear sight. It will shoot awsome groups at 100 yards

That is great shooting!!

I am building a GPR right now in .54.

If I may ask what did you not like about the Lyman trigger?? The set trigger seems plenty light for target work.

******,

My Lyman trigger may have been flawed. It would not always hold in the set position. The replacement from TOW is sound and crisp.... works everytime. And as a target trigger, the set trigger is great. If I hadn't had problems with my original, I wouldn't have changed it. It is plenty good for target work if it functions well.

My suggestion, if you like it, don't fix what ain't broken!

Wow! That's pretty good! I'm still working at 50yd offhand and still have a way to go.
