Greetings all,

Am thinking about putting target sights on the GPR.

Talked with Lyman and the suggested sights for this purpose were as follows:

Front - 17A AEU
Rear - 57 GPR

Any thoughts or personal experience?

Thanks again,
jhn

I added a 57GPR rear peep and left the stock post. I might go to a thinner post, haven't decided as of yet to do that. I needed some help because of the failing eyesight, buckhorn was to blurry to see. If you are familar with say a M1 Garand setup, gives the same sight picture. Post and target will get much clearer, your ability to see the target will increase. You will only be limited then by the load consistency and your actual ability. I would have rather not had to go this route, but I no real choice. I don't really need to be PC, or meet competition guidelines just wanted to hit what I was aiming at. But, if you need to go both ways the sight comes off easy enough. If you leave your buckhorn in place you can line the buckhorn against the sightline from the peep at a selected range and your pretty much right on.

Thanks Steve.

I find the Buckhorn a bit blurry as well. It is also somewhat crude and fairly imprecise. Not that it is awful, but I just think it could be better. At forty yards the sight overwhelms the bulls-eye on my target.

And, with this particular rifle, my goal is not to be PC but to have fun.

Thanks again for the input,
john

Something you guys might think about. I don't know if you do target shooting, hunting or both, but here's a poor mans quick fix to failing eyesight.
Take an old pair of glasses and sight down the barrel like you're shooting, take a non permanent marker and put a dot right where you look thru the lens. Should be in the upper inside corner somewhere. Now take a piece of electricians take and a needle. Heat the needle and make a small pin hole in the tape. Put the pin hole where the mark on the lens was.
Its annoying when looking straight ahead, but when you look down the barrel, the sights, both front and back as well as the target should be crystal clear. You'll like it.
The pin hole acts like the diaphram on a camera lens. The smaller the hole the greater the depth of field. It works and keeps the looks of the rifle without the unsightly (pun) peepsights. Not to mention it travels from one gun to the next without the expense of new sights on each one.

Good morning all,

Well I have decided on a happy medium. I order new open sights rather than the peep sights.

They are very simialr to the buckhorn, but a bit more precisely made and the front sight has a white bead to help position your shots and the rear sight folds down for storage.

I noticed that I liked the sights on my friends Cabelas Hawken - a simple "V" rear sight with a round front bead. Made placement much easier to replicate.

So i will see how this works.

Thanks for all the input - much appreciated.

I haven't taken any precise measurements but...If I hold my T/C Hawken next to my GPR the holes on the tang look like they are identically spaced. Does anyone know if I can use the T/C peep on both rifles without drilling??

I'm thinking about just buying one and worst case I'll just put it on the Hawken. I like te T/C sight profile better than the GPR.

I have a Deerstalker that came with the open sights and white bead up front. I used it and liked it for the past 14 years, but my eyes are getting worse, 50 years old. I put the 57 sml peep on and love it. With the white bead, it is a real good set of sights.
