Your lock also looks like you need a drum to hold the nipple which I suspect you don't have?

Here are a few more photos. Sorry if this is dragging out a bit.

Notice the measurements, it looks like at the lock plate and end cap the measurement is 15/16" but at the wood part of the stock it looks to be 7/8" :hmm:

This is definitely a CVA stock. Last I heard, Deer Creek still had parts, such as barrels, but I don't have their contact info anymore. I'm sure someone does though.

Couple days ago talking to my dad he asked if I'd be interested in a muzzle loader. Never having a gun before and wanting to get into hunting more and more I told him absolutely! He went on to tell me it was a Thompson Center Hawken in almost new condition. Being a vintage car and recurve enthusiast I was more than happy to see the classic design and function. Might be the only gun ill ever own.

The only thing is that I need a barrel. After researching my options I think I'd like to shoot round balls both because they work well and are economical.

Looking on eBay I see a few for sale but want to make sure I'm asking the right questions with the seller. I realize finding a clean example is very important. I also think I want something with a 1/66 barreling? Does that sound correct or is this something that can be different for its intended use?

Most hunting will be deer, possibly bear.

It looks like they are usually selling between $125 and $200

Any other recommendations would be appreciated

Thanks!
Steve

With the proper rifling depth for a cloth patched projectiles, .008" minimum I would not want more than .012", 48-56-66-72 ALL work fine. People worrying about twist in a RB gun in 50-58 need not worry if its slower than 48. ALL original Hawken's were 1:48. But they were rifled for cloth patched projectiles.
If you need a replacement barrel call Tip Curtis. Drop ins for TC are HARD TO FIND now. http://www.nmlra.org/classifieds.asp?ID=13

I would also point out that the TC is not a classic ML. Its a TC.

how long does a thing need to be around, and how many folks must like it, before it can be considered a classic?

I would have to argue, that considering how long the T/C Hawken has been around and how many black powder shooters get their start with this very gun, that it has entered the halls of the classics.

I tend to agree but but to the elitist if it wasnt hand crafted by Jerimiah Johnson himself its just not a "classic"..

I bought a T/C Hawken Green Mountain drop in barrel from Tip Curtis about two weeks ago with a slow prb twist. At that time he had all calibers in stock for Hawkens and Renegades. Shipping was lightning fast and communication was excellent. I would highly recommend him as a source if that's what you are looking for. His classified ad is in the current issue of Muzzle Blasts.

I can't believe there are some in this thread that are still advising a barrel for a TC.

It's obvious that this is one of the Spanish imports, beit Traditions, CVA or Ardesa,,no matter how hard you try, your not going to make a TC barrel fit in that stock.

Now,
They made two different styles of attachment to the tang, Some have a hook others have a button. To be honset I've never had one with a button but if skota can post a picture of the end of the tang maybe someone will see the difference.

yes sir, it is a CVA,you can tell by the under rib set up,i think the wood is beech wood or something, i have one just like it, i was surprised how well it shoots.really accurate, i got it from a auction for 45 dollars

Your CVA barrel might be available at Deer Creek.
They bought all of the available CVA parts available in the USA a few years ago and they know these guns like the back of their hand.

They don't have a web site so you will have to call or write them.

And I would also point out that we are not talking TC here! Classic or not.

It's too bad they no longer produce the rifle. I started my muzzle loading journey with a T/C kit.

I think you should have to be able to quote the contents of that note for permission to enter this forum. :applause: :v

"I, Hatchet Jack, being of sound mind and broke legs, do leaveth my rifle to the next thing who finds it, Lord hope he be a white man. It is a good rifle, and kilt the bear that kilt me. Anyway, I am dead. Sincerley, Hatchet Jack."

I would agree with those who have identified your rifle as a CVA. I also agree that the best place to look for a barrel would be Deer Creek Products,
(765) 525-6181. I have been to their place of business and they have an amazing supply of guns and parts.
