Just saw a pirate movie called Cutthroat Island starring Geena Davis. In one scene they use a flintlock grenade launcher to lay waste to a town. Typical hollywood fireworks but this is the only time that I have seen one of these except in LOTM. At least in this one we get to see it used. Pretty cool actually.

Check out the builders bench under "Fun project"

There is some seriously poor acting in that movie...

But I own the dvd anyway. And watch it often.

I also own the soundtrack. The score in that movie is AMAZING!

Now to the "flintlock" part of my post.

Did you notice the really long shot that the quarter master, Mr Blair made with that musket?

I didn't realize a smoothbore had that kind of range and accuracy to be able to take out a man standing on the yardarm of a moving ship 100 yards away. :bull:

And by the way, if you own the verstion of LOTM that shows the scene where the british are marching out to meet the french and one guy has a mortar, you must know that movie pretty well. You notice in that version (as compared to the original release) hawkeye does not speak the words to Maj Hayward, "One day you and I are going to have a serioud disagreement."?

I just pay way too much attention to details. Especially when it comes to movies.

Thanks for the suggestion Roy . That Pyrate link was very interesting. As far as the CI movie when I saw that smoothbore musket shot I remember thinking "Yeah right" . But they did seem to show how pirates carried a variety of weapons. When Morgan was getting ready to board the other ship she was carrying five differant pistols. Another thing that bugged me was after close quarters broadsides the ship didn't show that much damage. Not like they showed in Master and Commander anyway.

Master and commander was an awesome movie. In my opinion, they did a really fine job of presenting naval warfare at the time correctly.

I just bought it last night and watched it. It was an excellent movie. Set in 1805, we still hadn't kicked the British butts in the War of 1812 yet so I could still cheer for them and poopoo the French,LOL. Any other good, recent "Flintlock" movies out there in DVD land that I should know about???

Hey Arrowstorm,

If you think Master and commander was good you ought to check out the A&E series Horatio Hornblower. There are eight movies in the series each about two hours long. Some of the best films I have ever seen. Rather than buying them try out the free trial period on netflix.

As far as a hundred yard shot with a smoothie? I do it all the time but so far I've never fired at a man on a moving ship. I guess it depends on how well you know your gun and how you practice with it. The benchrest paper shooting folks probably wouldn't make that shot but a hunter?

Charcloth.
