I was watching a video and the author loaded xx grain, then filled x grains of "grit" before loading the ball which placed the ball near the mouth of the barrel. This intrigued me, but I have no idea what grit they were talking about.

The grit in the video was poured from a specific powder flask (for grit only). I suppose it could be COW, but it would be fine ground...

Sounds like one of those Euro types trying to speak english. Corn-meal and Cream of wheat are used as fillers by match shooters to allow seating ball just under flush with light to medium loads for best accuracy with revolvers. Some Euros seem to think using filler over powder gives better accuracy in single shots do to not having wet patch touch your powder. Based on my testing and actual match results I have found filler in single shots unneeded. A wet patch w/soapy water swabbed on a dry towel gives great results as long as long as you shoot soon after loading ...c

Could be grits ground corn hominy cooked and usually served with butter and bacon or fried ham.
Also known as Georgia ice cream something you poor Yankees don't know about. Now you know.
You are welcome
Bunk

LOL...I grew up on grits and hominy...no the fella was filling the 36 cal cylinder with "grit" before the ball to seat the ball near the bore as he was test firing a pistol at a range...and he was anything but southern, if his accent had anything to do with it :)

(as maybe from Wisconsin or Michigan type of accent)

I'm originally from NJ and spent some of my college years in FL I now live in CA (boo-hoo). I like grits - with two sunny side up eggs and some bacon or Canadian ham on the side - YUM- :thumb: ;):ghostly::ThankYou:!!!!

If you get the chance (don't know when that will happen in CA) try a good big piece of country ham with red-eye gravy (red-eye gravy is coffee based)

corn meal...there is some thought tuggin at the back of my mind about hearing about corn meal as a filler when I was younger...

Yes, Grits. Cornmeal compresses too much. Even though I am originally from Minnesota, in this case grits is better than cream of wheat. I followed this practice for awhile but saw no difference in my accuracy so dropped the extra step.
So the first time I encountered grits I asked for milk from the waitress. I think she thought I was going to use it for my coffee. When I poured it on my grits and sprinkled sugar on top I thought she was going to have a stroke right then and there. Then she uttered this statement, " You ain't from around here, are ya?"

As the British Sheriff in Silverado says, “As you may have guessed, I am not from these parts.”
