Yes, Grits. Cornmeal compresses too much. Even though I am originally from Minnesota, in this case grits is better than cream of wheat. I followed this practice for awhile but saw no difference in my accuracy so dropped the extra step.
So the first time I encountered grits I asked for milk from the waitress. I think she thought I was going to use it for my coffee. When I poured it on my grits and sprinkled sugar on top I thought she was going to have a stroke right then and there. Then she uttered this statement, " You ain't from around here, are ya?"
I used to put sugar on my grits in the chow hall, too.
 
I remember being told that oat meal would leave a fowling ring in the cylinder that was hard to get out. Anyone know the truth of that or is it an old wives tale?

I have learned over the years that old wives tales, generally have been passed down from someone's experience.

How much truth there is by the time we hear it is subjective.
