Bought a "nice" Lancaster stock from Pecatonica in Friendship. A month later, when the 40 cal. Rice barrel arrived, I discovered the fore end of the stock was badly crooked and twisted. I managed to heat and straighten it out so the barrel will seat without getting into a battle of biblical proportions. Still slightly twisted at the last 6inches, but I figure acra-glass will help solidify the unit. As I was penciling in the outline of the nosecap, I realzed the stock and barrel is twisted out of alignment enough to cause the groove in the cap to be off 3/32 from the ramrod groove. Any tricks to solving this problem, or should I forego the cap?

Steam, hot steam, and over bend the wood so that when it follows its memory it will be where you want it.

I have seen stocks that were bent 1/2" off line at the wrist with steam to achieve the proper cast off.

If it is that severely twisted I think I would call Pecontica and ask about a replacement. A warp is one thing, a spiral is another.

Yes, get a replacement stock. As for the nosecap, Lancaster rifles commomly had a nosecap with no ramrod groove. Simply file off the groove from the forward end of the forestock, file in a decorative ending for the groove, and inlet the cap. A period correct way to attach it is with a copper rivet. :m2c:

I didn't try laying this on Pecatonica's lap because I should have been smart enough to see the defects. I was just too wrapped up in admiring the curl in the wood.

This rifle is for the wife, so I've had to shorten and reportion the butt and forend to fit her. All hardware (except lock, trigger and barrel which will be polished) will be german silver. Sideplate is a cutout floral design in jewelry silver and some silver wire to balance the rifle's appearance. Stock to be whiskey brown.
Trying to make this rifle look like a ladies gun.

Anyways, the latest idea is to pour a pewter nosecap which could be filed inline with the ramrod groove and yet hide the slight misalignment between the barrel and the barrel inlet. Not knowing what polished pewter looks like, do you think it would look ok with the german silver?

Polished Pewter looks like polished lead.

I would call Dick Greensides at Pecatonica and tell him what the situation is.
He may suggest steaming the stock, but without something large like a big piece of PVC pipe and a way to get steam into it, that can be a chore.
If you politely mention that your friends on the Muzzleloading Forum suggested contacting him, he might say "send it back to me and I'll either straighten it or replace it."

I would recommend a phone call to them at (815) 968-1995 rather than E-Mailing them. They seem to answer the phone, but take their time with E-Mails.
