GRRW North West Trade Gun - First timer

GRRW No.1 Northwest Trade Gun .50cal. Did a little shooting today and had a blast! Tomorrow, I will be setting up my shooting bags and try it off something stable. Ignition was fast, trigger pull was maybe in the 3 to 4lb range. A very comfortable gun. It was weird getting used to that butt plate as I shoot a Hawken, but it was a nice feeling on the shoulder. I am hoping to find an accurate load out to at least 75 yards with this smoothbore and use it for a mule deer hunt in september. An extremely well put together NW gun! Doc did one heck of a job one this one!

That is a fine looking gun you have there. I've always been fascinated with the history surrounding the North West Trade Gun. Are you planning to use it with shot as well as round ball? That looks like it would make a dandy little small game gun. Hope you get a nice one with it come fall.

Yes, I have some #8 birdshot that would be great for bunnies and grouse.

need a bench to properly work up loads plain and simple. A little hard to adjust a front sight without.

I do the same, black powder or modern cartridge, long gun or pistol. Load development and sight adjustment is done from the bench, with good bags.
That way if groups aren't good or p.o.i. is off after that, I know for sure it isn't the load or sights, and I know what that load and sight arrangement is truly capable of.
But, once load is established and sights are how I want them,,,,,,, no, more, bench, shooting is thereafter done from field positions only.

I am genuinely happy for Frontiers new trade gun and especially with it being a .50.
My flippant comment about the bench was wrong. What I should of made clear was that I thought Frontiers shooting off hand and behind the log was very good for a first session and that he doesn't necessarily need a bench.
Please keep the reports coming Frontiers.

I’m mostly on my phone typing and it easy to hit the wrong letter or number. But I’ve seen these offered in .50 so just wanted to Mack sure.

Nice smoothbore. I can tell you've been shooting percussion for a long time by the way you want to put it in half cock right after you shoot. I had that habit until the range officer at Friendship told me to stop doing it. Apparently it's not safe to load a Flintlock on halfcock

??? Huh? If the pan/frizzen is open, what would be unsafe about it?
