Just as FYI...I'm starting to get a little burned out on deer hunting...leaning more and more towards different types of hunting with Flintlocks...

That's one of the reasons that I've gotten into rabbit hunting with beagles. You get a lot of action & don't spend your day just sitting.
Squirrells are fun, but I don't know anyone who has dogs for hunting them around here.

That sounds like it will be a blast. No squirrels around here unfortunately. I hear they have big greys out East but I don't know anyone there. Maybe I can swap someone a squirrel hunt for a deer or hunt someday.

Have fun and have a very Merry Christmas.

Roundball, I squirrel hunt in North Central NC. We don't use dogs, but it's way more fun than deer huntin' (both which I've done more'n 40 yrs.). Anyway you'll have a blast, specially if he's as funny as the pard I hunt with. He uses a .75 Tulle and I use a .45 CVA (ground shots, with safe backstops) on 60 acres!! PM me and mebe we can set somethin up...Bud

roundball,

like you have really come onto a possible
friend and a squirrel honey hole.Be sure to share
those photos.Need any recipies for them,I have a
few.

I have not hunted with a squirreldog since 1982 that is when the best squirrel dog [IMHO] that ever walked passed away of cancer. She was about 10years old I still miss Kay.she had a few squirrels drop to her with a t/c senaca .36 cal. I grew up with coon hounds beagles and squirrel dogs got away from it in the early 80's this fall I traded for[rescued] a couple beages from a guy who wasn't taking real good care of them, they are decent rabbit dogs Iwas out this morning with them and carrying my cva trapper seen a rabbit they were running a round a thicket a couple of times but never got a shot but had a great time anyway I'll smoke one sooner or later

I've never hunted squirrels with a dog, always just stillhunt and set and wait. The squirrels out here are silver grays and some get the size of a house cat, dang near:)
After reading about the use of dogs here I'm wondering if my beagle pup that I got from animal rescue could be taught the trade. The BIG question is how to train them for squirrels?

Never used a beagle , but have had beagle & fiest mixed which made a good dog. We always started them when they were young 3 to 6 months old on ground squirrel's .The reason for the ground squirrel's was they were more abundent than the gray's. If you can catch a live one let him go on the dog, if the dog get's bit that will be even better he will either hate squirrel's from then on, or have no interest in them :surrender: .
