I like your base ring. Some one with less tools could make one with a saber saw. Using a bit of inginuity, some Bondo, masking tape and saran wrap you could mold the concave surface to fit the ball just tape the plastic wrap to the ball to get it to seperate from the bondo. I won't be pretty but it would work.

If I remember right ROOTNUKE's page showed a box about 12X12 open at the top with a ring cut out, lined with the rubber strip around the top, and the bowling ball sat down in the rubber ring. the bowling ball had the top cut flat and a drill press vise was bolted to the flat. handles were mounted the sides of the ball alowing you to rotate it as needed. I don't think rootnukes pages are any longer accessable.

I watched Rootnuke's tutorial on building his Lancaster with interest, tried to look at it later and it was gone so I tried several web searches to find what became of him. His web site had dropped off the radar apparently never to be seen again. I noticed from his profile he hadn't been to this site in a while as well. Hope all is well with him, he sure did a wonderful job with the information he put out in the past.

tried to help.

Hi wulf,

I am new to this board, and I came across your offer to share your plans with the good gentleman Blacksburg. This is something I might be interested in having a copy of. I don't mean to be presumptious, but might you be willing to share them with me? If this request caught you off guard, and you are disinclined to do so, that's O.K. too.

If you are inclined, what do I need to provide you with?

And speaking of being new, greetings to all.

Mark

Wow, I apologize for not revisiting this post sooner. Lots of good info and suggestions. Thanks to all.
I bought a die sinkers ball or machinists' vise years ago at a flea market($20.00). I used to use it for checkering handgun grips. It should be ideal for engraving with little to no modification.
That mixing bowl idea sounds like it would work as does the bowling ball design.
Thanks again to all. Gotta' love helpful, knowledgeable folks like yourselves.
