"I guess it's just one of those things, along with the cap fragments to the forearm, that make an underhammer so special."

Damn! I thought I was the only one to fish little bits of brass out of my left forearm with a pair of tweezers. I thought it was just a one-time fluke! I will wear my old motorcycle jacket when I shoot the rifle I am making now.

I'm starting to think Bill's mule ear guns make a lot of sense for practicality and have no need of a flash diverter to keep from cooking your forearm. Mike D.

I've never had my underhammers spit cap fragments or cook my forearm. If your hammer spring is strong and you don't overload, you won't have these problems whether shooting a side lock, mule ear or underhammer.

It depends totally on how one holds the gun while match shooting. I'm rather short so I have to pull my forearm purchase clear back to the base of the flash guard to achieve my most steady offhand position, with my support arm against my rib cage. This position resulted in a burned wrist or jacket sleeve fire, repeatedly for me. The flash guard totally eliminated this problem on my gun.MD

After putting up with the occasional sting from cap fragments to my supporting arm, I came up with a position that keeps my forearm out of harm's way. Because the barrel is so light, I can easily support my rifle by holding it like a two hand hold on a handgun. I position my left hand over the front of the trigger guard and over my right hand. It is just like a two hand hold on a handgun except that my elbow of my supporting arm is tucked into my ribs. This seems to have solved the cap fragment problem.
