I made this wee box with purple heart and striped maple. It will hold bout 1 1/2 tins of caps or whatever your will. Bob

That beats an Altoid tin :thumbsup:

Will put this on my ta do list.

Can't quite figure out the lid, is it slotted at the pivot point ?

Yes the seconod lid is slotted so it can slide back out of the dovetail shaped thingy at the front then it can swivel as well.
thanks for looking. As a tallow box it should be aboit 3/8 inch wider.

I watched Roy Underhill build one on The Woodwrights Shop a few weeks back. He called his a "tallow box". That's the same critter.
 
Right on. Roy said the old woodsmiths used mutton tallow to keep the saw blades rust free.. I felt it could be utilized in our sport fow whatener steikes yer fancy.

I sure its something I am not seeing, but why does the top have to be turned at all before the next piece slides away from the dove tail? Is it something about the length of the screw preventing the second top cover from moving to open the box?

The top lid just swiveld on a post under the screw and the second lid is slotted to allow it to slide back so it becomed disengaged from the dovetail at the front then it swivels as well

When the topmost lid is swung to the closed position it locks the secondary lid preventing it from moveing anywhere!!!
