What is the best way to hang a flintlock barrel to finish it? I thought to use a wire hanger in the touchhole but I don't want to mess up the threads.

Thanks.

I've always hung my barrels by running a wire through the clearance hole for the lock bolt that goes through the breech lug.

I never hang one. I drive a wooden dowel in the muzzle end & let the tang support the tang ine & set them on 2 clean blocks of wood.

At the muzzle, a cut down 3/4" dia. dowel w/ plastic tape wrapped around the portion that is in the bbl eliminates any water or solution rusting the bore. I use a 3/4" dia. x 6" long aluminum rod that has a tapered slot cut in one end to accept the tapered part of the breechplug w/ a transverse thru hole that allows a bolt that also goes thru the rear lock bolt hole and is tightened w/ a nut. The tang rests on this aluminum rod. Have a frame made from 2x4s that is an horizontal cradle for the bbl suspended by the dowel and aluminum rod and is used to apply the browning solution. This allows the bbl to be rotated when applying the solution and also suspends the bbl in the horizontal sweat box....Fred

I use a piece of baling wire through the bolt hole in the web of the breech.

I have not hung one either. I plug the muzzle with a tappered dowel and the touch hole with a tooth pick. I then set on in my box on dowels. Finishes up just fine. If I were to hang one I would use the hole through the tang or breach plug.

Like BirdDog, I do not care to brown the under side of the stock, so I put it on blocks. I do not hang it. However, some people like to use a sweat box and hanging works well since the heat source works best vertically. Wires through the lock bolt hole or through the tang bolt hole shoud get this done. This of course assumes that the barrel has had its breech plug installed...

DITTO!!! No need ta worry about dropping them by some misfortune. :shocked2:

If it's a hooked breech gun, I generally just lock a set of vice grips onto the hook and hang that from a coat hanger wire. I reposition the vice grips slightly before each coat of solution. Enough of it dribbles past the vice grips to do a good job on the hook, though it's not going to be seen anyway.
