Just watched Jeremiah Johnson again. I noticed the rifle he took off Hatchet Jack has a sideplate. Anyone know about this rifle?

i`m looking also for an information what kind of Plains Style it is

because this Rifle has not the normal signs of a Hawken, pls have a look on the pewter Tincap it`s a flat one but not the juvenescent shape like the normal Hawken shows.
I have build a same like this on my old Uberti Santa Fe Hawken Kit

Maybe anyone has got more Info

cheers Klaus

Well....Google brought up this thread on a search for "juvenescent shape". That wasn't a lot of help. Dictionary.com said "youthful". Now, if you are talking about 18 year old girls, I understand. But, for pewter things on a rifle, I'm still wondering. :idunno:

Klaus... I would agree that tapering or tapered is a better translation for verjuengend.

Einen guten Tag haben.

If you remember he found out the hard way about shooting over a horse's neck.

That Pewter cap should be correct. Pewter was alot easier to work with than forming a brass cap.
Plus it would be flat if they did not take time to round off the front of the stock. Just my 2 cents but I could be wrong.

You would probably find it in the book of California guns I would suspect.

I have that movie on vhs somewhere, and I've tried many times to pause the video to get a better look at that rifle, with some success. No, it's not Hawken by any stretch, I'm thinking it was some garage built plains rifle that the producers got a hold of to give the appearance of a Hawken. This movie was made before the "Hawken craze" of the 1970's, in fact, it is responsible for much of that fad, so I don't think the producers really knew, or cared, what an authentic Hawken looked like.

The nose cap is poured pewter, with a sweep-back on the bottom (best way to describe it), not a stright line where it mates with the wood. Very non-Hawken.

Also, it is pretty much accepted that very few, if any, Hawkens came out of the shop with poured nose caps. The iron and brass they used had a tendancy to break off, or fall off, due to only one screw holding it in place through a thin web of wood, so many original Hawkens were reparied by casting a new nose cap in place, easy fix and very permanent. Back in the late 60'/early 70's, most Hawken repros were made with the poured cap, but now it is considered a farb. Bill

Hi Suz,

yes you`re right.
thx for advise
@ all
i`ve seen the Movie yesterday once more and try out find some more little hints about the faults hidden in this Movie.
The Speaker in the beginning told that he bought a Horse , needful equipment and finaly a Rifle and he got one, a real Hawken Rifle but it`s a Caliber 30 only, but by Good a real Hawken. So far the German Text!
But if we have a look on the first hunting scene on a deer we could see that the Rifles Bore is much more as a .30 Caliber maybe a .50 or 54 Caliber... and later nothing will inform the viewer if Jeremiha has taken some .50 RB`s or a Mould from Hatchet Jack to feed his new acquisition ... typical Hollywood :hmm:
