Crockett nipple wrench

Has anyone found an actual nipple wrench that fits a crockett yet? I had an old wrench I done some file work to and made it fit somewhat decent but it finally broke on me. Because I had to file the sides thiner it weakened it and it finally spread out and stripped. I'd love to find a wrench that actually fits before wasting money on another one and have to file it down again as well just to get a few uses out of it before it craps out on me. Thanks in advance!!

Have you actually used this wrench on a Crockett rifle? It has a “very” thin space between the nipple and lock to work with.

I’d order one of these in a hot second if you can confirm.

Can NOT confirm as to a Crocket. I have used it on antique guns with a very tight bolster. I modified the small ‘pistol’ socket slightly and without trouble to fit on a larger nipple. The small socket will fit into any space you can get the nipple in to.

Scott, I have a friend with a metal lathe. He made one to fit my Crockett. They are thin for sure.

Your nipple may be in way too tight. It only takes a thumb and a forefinger on the wrench to tighten or loosen a nipple. Use anti-seize too.

I was thinking along the same lines. I ordered the ratchet and rifle socket. Thinking I may be able to throw it in the chuck, spin it up and file it down if needed.

If it’s too big to try I can look at modifying the pistol socket as mentioned above. It does appear to be significantly slimmer.

I have one that will fit the factory nipple perfectly. But not the TOTW one I replaced it with.

I was out this morning again. 28 degrees, clear and calm. Just a perfect morning. I hunted down the road from my place. Last year I shot a lot of squirrels there but this year there isn’t as much food and they scattered out.

Still saw and heard a fair amount. I got three shots and three squirrels. All chest shots. I was pleased!

Going to hunt above the house tomorrow morning.

My godson said to me today “ don’t you work anymore?” I said yep, when it’s windy or raining. Lol. I’m having a lot of fun!

I have one that will fit the factory nipple perfectly. But not the TOTW one I replaced it with.

I’m using TOTW nipples as well. If I can figure out a way to mod the ratchet successfully, I will update this thread…

If you don't remove the nipple on a regular basis you need to spray some wd40 and let it soak. I use a colt navy wrench and clean everything,

Update and a few pics below.

The wrench arrived last night. The rifle socket technically does “work” with the TOTW nipple on a Crockett but not ideal.

You have to slide it on at an angle and it does not go all the way down. You also can’t get more than about a 1/3rd twist.

Having said that, if you spin the nipple on and off with you fingers, this ratchet will do the final tightening. It will also loosen a tight one enough to get it started.

It also marked up the edge of my nipple channel. Not the end of the world. This is a woods rifle for me and that area commonly gets marked up on most rifles.

Thinning the walls of the socket should do the trick, but I think I’m going to order the pistol socket first. I’m kicking myself for not getting both together. I think the pistol socket will be a cleaner mod, but will make a final decision when I have them both in front of me.

The ratchet itself is a nicely made, quality tool that worked perfectly on my “normal” percussion locks. It’s well worth the purchase.

I will take this to the a final conclusion and post more pics when I have modified one of the sockets.
