-----did Jeramiah get a bullet mold with the rifle-----

Yeah. I always wondered if he got the rb's to go with the gun since, if I recollect right, the gun he bought was a small caliber.

He took the rifle... so don't you think he would have taken the fixin's for it too?

The fixin's might not've been on Jack's body. He might've left his ball mold n' such back at his camp. Just nit-pickin', o'course.

I always git a kick out of the fight with the 5 natives that killed the Swan an Calib.
Watch it in slow mo and you'll see trees in the background recoiling with wire tied too'm to get the guy's to fly backwards.
The only hat's off I have to give to that scene is the dress and accuterments,,nice stuff.

I took an Elk off those very Mtns. last month. I didn't think to look for the bullet molds.

Which mountains? It was filmed in 9-10 different "mountain" locations in Utah.

You going in Grizzly& Indian country with a .30? Not me, I say it was a .50. The old writing(5) was thought to be a (3). .30 would be ok for squirrels. Dilly

Yeah I believe in the movie, it says all he could get was a .30, I wasn't the script writer. :haha:

If I was he would have taken a .50 and Hatchet Jack woulda had a .54.

The movie makes the same mistake that James Michner made when he wrote "Centennial", he confused balls to the pound with caliber. I think the screen writers used Centennial as a resource for the movie, and nobody caught the mistake.

Rod

Rod - the Jeremiah Johnson movie was mostly based on the book:
"Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson" by Raymond W. Thorp and Robert Bunker (1969)
the error appears in that book and the screenwriter's apparently didn't know any better than the author so........
A major problem for the uninitiated is in the early days (pre-1850's) calibre (anglicized to caliber) was the French term for the bore size (i.e. in France a 24 bore meant the same as the Eglish 24 gaug) and was often used interchangably with the English gauge (balls per pound) designation and often still is. I've seen it in period writings when talking about what is in actuality a 28 gauge (i.e. modern designation .58 calber) as being a 28 caliber.
Caliber used as the designation of the bore diameter rather than the gauge entered the lexicon sometime in the late 1840's or early 1850's with the wider usage of conical bullets - an 1859 Colt Firearms advert gives the "caliber" of their revolvers in three different ways: bore diameter, balls per pound - round ball, and balls per pound - conical bullets.

Also "Centennial" wasn't written until 1974, two years after the JJ movie came out....maybe Michener's error is based on watching JJ or reading Thorp's book??

Mtns. not Mtn. Ranges. That part of the movie was filmed in the "High Uintas" near the Wyoming Border.

hello from Germany,

you`re right,in the german version of JJ the background speaker at the beginning of the movie told that JJ was looking for a Caliber 50 or larger Hawken but he could got a.30 Cal.Hawken Rifle only but damned a real Hawken....so far.. no information about further stuff related to his Hawken. After he found Hatched Jack there are no info if he had a Mould or Balls found at place...

that`s Hollywood for real they don`t expect peoples like us how are familiar with the stuff and looking with open eyes what they are offer ...
in my youthtime i was great fan from John Wayne Movies and i think i`ve seen all but today i could`t look at them if i see whats are all wrong with facts and equipment....

greetings from Cologne
Klaus
