have any of you ever made your own Leaf Spring?

I found old mower blades about right for heavier M spings & temper with the 'flashed up' then burning out in oil it should be ' Lard oil ' But old sump oil works. Old Kits plan is fine I think he bought the Dixie stock but he was reasors full . I still find spring making a pain having only two hands when you really need three ... .Rudyard
 
Whale Oil used to be used as a quenching Medium, I believe that Transmission Oil is the nearest modern equivalent.
O1 is too higher Carbon and ally content to be suitable for the type of gun spring that we make. It dosn't like hot bending.. We need an old long grain plain carbon steel. Most knife blade steels are addaquate ; about 070/075 carbon content. Luckily our local black smith Had some Very old cart springs hiddenin a thick bramble patch. He gave me a couple of leaves.at 3ft long and 1/4" thick I think the amount will see me out. :ghostly: OLD DOG..
