IMO, Charles E. Hanson, Jr is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to the Hawken rifle and the book you bought is quite good.
It could have had more photos though.
It is a little smaller than I wish it was but what are you going to do?
Another good book, also by Charles Hanson is "THE PLAINS RIFLE".
In it he covers the Hawken as well as other rifles that were similar to it and I consider it to be a good source of information.
I can't be as generous with my compliments and thoughts on John D. Baird's two books.
Of the two, "Hawken Rifles, The Mountain Man's Choice" is pretty good with some information and photos.
"FIFTEEN YEARS IN THE HAWKEN LODE" on the other hand is basically useless unless you want to read about his personal experiences while reenacting a Mountain Man.
As for your wanting a true replica of a Hawken rifle that's up to you.
You should be aware that these rifles usually weighed over 10.5 pounds with some of them going over 13 pound
Being this heavy, carrying them around can become a bit of a chore.
They were a very stout rifle designed to withstand very hard abuse without failing.
The Mountain Men didn't have to worry about the heavy weight because they usually were riding horses.
