I just bought 3 tins of musket caps and it amounted to around 30 bucks. Not too bad right? It's all fun and games until they hit you with a $65 HAZMAT FEE. Someone, please explain for the love of god why this is! Someone share my pain!
Hazmat fee is set by the shipper. Grafs is currently $23.50 I believe.

that seems high but the vender sets the fee. the reason for the fee is shipping hazmat is more involved and demanding than regular shipments. there are more regulations in place to try and keep the public safe.

Traveler's Antiques and Trading in Claude, TX. These folks have been of late the go to place for powder and caps as they have them. If this was a normal charge I would think we would hwve heard about such a high fee. Bet there is over 100 members here that hwve bought from them in the last 4 to 6 months. Not a word on this high charge from sny other buyer that I can recall.

I would call em and ask..

Find a few folk and do a group buy, split shipping and hazmat on one order. One of my first posts here I found someone local to me willing to split costs on hazmat and shipping, he told me what he wanted, I placed order and forwarded receipts and tracking numbers, it was delivered to me, we met up and he gave me money and I gave him powder and we're all happy and saved some $ and met a new fellow shooter.

EG, from grafs.com (flat rate $13 shipping) one pound of powder just shipping and hazmat would be about $35 total. 8lbs would have same shipping and hazmat cost.

They actively want to discourage such shipping. Many guys will pool an order and get many tins at a time to 'save' on the shipping; as long as you have club buddies or someone to 'pool' with. Wow.

If you do go to an auction company and bid on anything to do with hazmat, make sure to get their hazmat fee, and make sure they will ship ammo, black powder, cap & primers.

I haven't ordered powder or caps in a couple of years, but HazMat fees have normally run $20-$30 in my experience. $44 seems awfully high, even in wild times like these.

As noted, the seller sets the price. I have always been happy with prices and service from Graf & Son. Prices, fees, and shipping charges are very competitive and they are "up front" about it... No surprises.

For me, the real angst sets in when it's time to take delivery. The shippers must deliver to a person who must sign for it, and they will not "hold at location" for you to pick it up. You have to meet the truck at your address, which I guess is fine and dandy for stay at home folks who can step out their front door onto the sidewalk. I, and I suspect a lot of us here, live out in the country, off a dirt road. My gate is over 200 yards from the house, and we never know exactly when the truck will come.

This is and probably the right thread to post this on, but while searching for some tools this morning from muzzleloaders I run across this statement and I have pasted and copied it below.

Attention Customers:

ATTENTION: UPS is currently seizing and destroying firearms related packages. We HIGHLY recommend USPS at this time. We are waiting for clarification from UPS on how that affects muzzleloaders and parts. Accessories should be OK, but please order accordingly.

Also, We are constantly getting new shipments of products, but due to high demand certain items, such as revolvers, kits, rifles and some accessories are selling out within hours of arrival. If there is a specific item you are looking for, please e-mail us and we will be happy to put you on our contact list. Customers who do this will be informed the moment a certain item arrives.
For similar reasons, we are not taking backorders at this time.

One way to bypass the Hazmat fee? Jump in your car or truck, drive to wherever and pick the stuff F to F. And at the price of fuel, the Hazmat fee + shipping in nothing.

When I buy, I talk to the Guys at the range/club, make a list of what everybody wants and EVERYBODY is happy.

Now that really depends on how far you have to drive and what your MPG is. If driving one of them thar Prius's, then your in good shape. :horseback:

Our drive is a half mile. Closest neighbors over 100 yards away. Came home one afternoon and my hazmat caps and powder had been left on front porch. My recollection is that was UPS. I find the quality of their regular route drivers to be good. But fill in drivers are poor to middling.
