Hello and welcome. A 50 is plenty big enough to take deer and double lung may not drop at hit but won't go far. Not sure of a brachial plexus shot since it itself would not be fatal.

Shot a buck breakig the left front shoulder , the .490 round ball continued diagonally through the deer , and stalled under the hide of the right rear ham. The insides of the deer looked like every organ had a hole , or a crease through it. That was impressive. Have killed 25+ deer w/ .50 cal. , 80 gr. FFFG , . .50 , and .62 in long rifles , are my two long time favorites.

If you can get the shot go for a high shoulder. The last 4 deer I have gotten were all high shoulder shots. The deer all dropped where they stood.

A fifty is fine...but round balls dont tend to leave entrance holes like a center fire might. My last two shot at about 35 yards were double lunged, ran about forty yards before dropping. Surprisingly small amount of blood outside the cavity....light snow on the ground, so it would have been easy to see. The hight shoulder shot would likelyhave knocked them over, but i hate to lose the meat.

My brother-in-law killed a buck with a shot to the shoulder with a .45 cal. with a target load. The ball went through the deer and stop in the skin on the other side. It expended very well. Like the old saying goes, You can eat the meat right up to the bullet hole. Welcome from North central Missouri.

Welcome here, hope to see a bunch from you
Yes a .50 is plenty, and lots of boys on this forum have done in deer with .50, .45 and .40.
Just be mindful of your range.
Round ball need to stay in range for good clean kills.
In general try to stay a hundred yards or less, fifty or twenty five is even better.
A .50 in a hundred yards is a killer on par with a 30-30
Think archery on steroids
