i got my t/c 54cal today, ups man brought it about 4:00, opened up the box to find a 54 t/c renagade that was listed as used in very good condition, the salemen said it looked like new. soon as i looked at it i knew it had never been shot, blue was perfect,no rust anywhere. but the lock plate was sticking out about the thickness of a dime and when i turned it over there was a crack running from the screw up to the top of the wood. the lock plate was bowed/bent. i called the guy back and he said not to worry he would send a shipping label and i could send it right back. thats fine but i done went and bought bullet molds a new jag and got my feelings hurt bad. i bought it at gun broker from a dealer from alabama who was cosigning it. i'm going to send it back in the morning after i call them to make sure they send the label to the ups store,i know i will be wasting my breath but i'm going to ask if the company will sell me just the barrel. reckon what a fare offer would be to make on the barrel if he would agree to sell barrel only.$100. or so the ones i been seeing sold on fleabay been bringing that or a little more.

If your lucky enough to get your money back from them I would cut your losses and look for another 54. Perhaps a GPR. I have been very lucky as far as Gun Broker goes but then again it sounds as though UPS may have put the rifle in a bind and caused the damage. Geo. T.

Here is the pictures i took of the damage on the rifle, the crack looks old to me and i don't see how the lock plate could have got like it is. The screw hole in the lock plate is striped out so i know it was bad before the shippers got their hands on it. The guy said they would give a full refund and even pay return shipping. they had well over a 1000 + feedbacks. The pictures that were in the auction looked good but they were took from afar. the close up pictures i asked for were of the muzzle bore and around the nipple area and they all looked very good. next time i will get close up pictures of ever angle of ever part or not bid.

Drill and tap to the next size bolt..wood glue and clamp the crack...
If you bought cheap your still ahead of the game.
Call the seller he might cut a deal.

Paid 250 and another 25 for shipping. if it was perfect i'd say it was fare price(i wouldn't think of selling my 50 cals for that)but like it is i want my money back or let me keep the barrel and give me back 150 but its a gun dealer company selling it as a consighment and i bet they will just want it back and then either sell like it is or have it fixed or give it back to the owner. i started to buy a couple different 54 barrels both renagades but everthing so far has that rust word that comes with them.

That crack is a well known design defect and under T/Cs lifetime warranty they replace the stocks at no charge.
Call T/C Cust Svc, tell them the stock has developed "that crack" and you need to send it in for warrenty replacement.

the lock is also bent and the hammer felt funny when i tried to cock it. i thought about the t/c warranty but if i was to call they would just say they don't have any and the warranty was for the original owner.

True dat... Had em replace a stock for me on a TC Renegade .54 I bought off gun broker. Johnny on the spot, no questions asked. Would at least be worth a call.

Likely the lock plate is warped from casing, the hole stripped and the stock cracked from trying draw it up flush with hold screw. I'd send it back as well, the lock will never be right with that bent plate. Mike D.

I think I have a spare lock if you can't get t/c to replace it. S+W bought them out and they aren't what they used to be. The crack is minor.
Send these pictures to the seller, see what he wants to do.
Nit Wit

The Renegade named Ol' Ugly had a crack just like that one but open all the way to the edge and following the wood grain diagonally down into the opening behind the lock. Repaired it and epoxy bedded the tang. Used thin wall poly styrene tubing to line the bolt hole for the bolt that holds the lock and drilled it back out afterwards. Now the stock is stronger than new.
No doubt you don't care to start repair ops on a new rifle you just paid hard money for, but as mentioned, that's a weak point in the design and it can be healed with no outward signs.

Well crap!

My Renegade just got that crack this afternoon. I was shooting just fine and dandy then noticed I had cracked it somewhere between taking it out of the gun safe and my next to last shot. :cursing:

So...
Anyone have the T/C contact information laying around?

I had a TC new Englander kit with a warped lock plate and fixed it in a couple of minutes using a hydraulic press.

I had a question about a lock (frizzen, actually) and I tried sending T/C an e- mail, which was pretty much ignored ... after a follow up e- mail and another five days, I called them on the telephone (you know -quaint little black plastic thing with a dial and a cord that goes into the wall)

what a world of difference ... talked to a real live human being who was pleasant and helpful ... my question was how to get a new frizzen, sine the old one was looking pretty ratty, but she said just send in the whole lock and they'd replace it with a brand new one ... I did that- sent it to them on Monday and had the new lock Thursday afternoon ...

this was before S&W bought them out - they probably fired that nice lady 'cause her pension was about to vest ...

the number on their website is 1-866-730-1614 ...

my free advice (no doubt well worth the price) is to call them and see what they say - you may have a pretty good deal after all, and if not, you've risked nothing ...

best of luck!

The seller sent me a return shipping label,I sent the rifle back and they refunded all my money. The guy that had put it up for auction said he just overlooked the damage and was very sorry for the problem. I bet he is, hes out $60.00 on shipping and still got a rifle that needs a lot of work.

Just curious, does your barrel lay easy in the stock channel or does it need to be held down the last little bit? The reason for asking is that some do require that last little bit to align for the wedge to go through and I've wondered if maybe that helped to stress the stock.
