getting back into muzzleloaders and had a question.

looking to build a rifle from a kit. i have a interarms (sp) .54 hawken already from about 30 years ago..

i would like to buy a new kit from some one or a shop that has them for my wife. i am capable of building the rifle but have been out of it long enough that i do not know who is building the better kits and or where to even begin looking for the kits..


can some one direct me to a company that sells builder kits?

If your looking for a kit that builds like your old kit did then look at Lyman, Traditions and Pedersoli.
These kits are already pretty much finished except for some fitting, sanding and applying a finish to the wood and the metal parts.

If your looking for a kit that consists of raw castings, a roughed out wood stock, a unbreeched, unvented barrel and will need at least 150 hours of work to fit all of the pieces and finish them but, and ends up a custom piece then look at Track of the Wolf, Pecatonica River, Muzzleloader Builders Supply, Chambers and a host of other suppliers.

Another tact that can be taken is to get a "In the White" build from places like TVM down in Mississippi.
These guns are put together but need sanding, a little shaping and finishing. They cost a bit more than the factory guns like Lymans but they are built with the finest of American parts (like the TOTW, Pecatonica River etc) and they are very nice guns.

It all depends on how much you want to spend, both in dollars and in hours.

Don't know where ya live, but if you are within a days drive of Nashville, TN........ Drive over to Tip Curtis Frontier Shop (615)654-4445. Well worth the drive, about 3 mil $ in inventory, he should have 50-75 In-the-White rifles on hand, not counting hundreds of stocks, locks, barrels, and a inventory you truly will not believe. If Tip don't have it, you probably don't need it......... :idunno:

This would give you a good selection, and allot of dif ones to shoulder & see what fits, rather than guess. If it is for a woman, it is normally important it be light & short. Fit is most crucial to them as the normally don't have the stamina to hold a heavy rifle up very long. What will feel light to you will usually be heavy to them...

I will second what Birddog6 says, I was over at Mr. Curtis's place in December he has about 4 or 5 racks full of guns in the white & some finished sitting just inside the front door. I spent about 2 hrs. looking & talking to him. He also still has some GM barrels or at least he did then.I got a .62 smoothbore barrel from him.He is located just north of Nashville at Cross Plains Tn.
