Does this look like everything should be covered or should I change a few things I am looking for advice from the ones that have done this before

**** skin cap, and a set of Buck skins with lots of fringe. Don't know why you need wads, but so .018 pillow ticking, and real black powder are a bit more important than a fringed bag from a 1960's TV show.

Mention "flintlock" in the description of the rifle, just to be sure. To start with just get the .530" balls. Instead of getting Wonder Wads, get some .015" Wonder Patches, the pre-lubed jobs. Also, don't Lyman ramrods take #10-32 fittings? You will probably want a short starter. Getting everything at once is a big order.

maybe a range rod for loading and cleaning, ball puller, flint knapping hammer, etc. You will see other things you like better as you go and you will eventually try many different things. congrats your well on your way.

Thanks made a few changes
The 54cal is out so did go with 50cal
Did find a starter package
which changed some things range rod now in order
Pillow thick
flint hammer
thanks for words of wisdom
(no more fringe bag)
Keep them coming

The Hoppe's No 9 Nitro Solvent 2 oz Bottle 40-902 is not the right stuff.

For the life of me, I don't know why Hoppe's decided to name their Black powder solvent, No9.

The No 9 Nitro solvent is the stuff that has been used by almost everyone for years.
It's the stuff that smells kinda like bananas but different. Anyone who has ever smelled it knows exactly what it is without even looking at the bottle.

I've used it, my dad used it and for all I know his dad used it but it was made for and used for cleaning guns that fired MODERN SMOKELESS NITRO BASED POWDERS. It was NOT made for cleaning black powder fouling or for use in a Black Powder firearm.

When Hoppe's came out with their BLACK POWDER SOLVENT AND PATCH LUBE they didn't change the name to something like Hoppe's No 10, or 8 or anything but 9.

I knew this would confuse people and it does.

Those who have used Hoppe's No 9 BLACK POWDER SOLVENT AND PATCH LUBE, say it's great stuff so add it to your list and get that NITRO solvent off (unless you have a few modern arms that shoot smokeless powder).

KD8, I wasn't trying to be mean with the fringe, and cap remark, but if you showed up somewhere like that you would look more like Gomer Pyle in New York City. A thought to keep in mind is that muzzleloaders are individual, so your idea to get .490, and .495 ball is a good one. But I would get small packages of patchers in varying thicknesses, as you develop a load for your gun. Even though many newb's ask for load info, there is a wide range in what will work best for you. As for cleaning, tap water with a drop of Dawn in it is the best and cheapest cleaner, I for more than 40 years have used windshield washer fluid with a drop of dawn to a pint of fluid as my cleaner.

thanks Bill
I have went thru manual online and going alot from what they suggest
I will have some lubed patches, dry patches, and also some pillow filler
I will also have .490 and .495 balls to try out.

Maybe drop the breech scraper. I've never needed one in the short 5 years I've been shooting BP. I didn't see a ball puller attachment listed. You'll need it. I guarantee it. I can't remember if you listed it, but a range rod is really important for cleaning and the heavy work, like pulling a ball. It's asking too much of your wooden ramrod to do these things.

Lyman GP rifles have Patent Breech designs like T/C's rifles...I never needed or used a breech face scraper or a vent pick with mine...wasn't needed.

My bag has fringe :stir:

I would drop the 495 balls and the flint knapper and the breech scrapper. You can use a paper clip if you find a need to pick the thouch hole which won't be often so that's off the list. Keep the fringed bag, they are cool looking, especially if you shoot in New York city.
Oh drop the wads and get several thickness of pre-lubed patches.
4f prime and 3f main charge of GOEX.

It's gonna be fun!

And most importantly for a Lyman GPR is a #50 drill. to enlarge the simply awful touch hole liner they use. :hmm:

Don't know what "pillow filler" is but I'd drop it too! It makes me think of some type of fluffy made made fiber...?

I myself would consider using Mink oil for lube instead of wonder lube, and maybe you might want to make your own stater, vent pick and pan brush just to save a few bucks. I'm not sure about the sling although it would be nice to have for when your dragging out a nice buck

aside from Zonie's advice about not fooling with Hoppes #9 cleaning solution, and you'll need a short starter, and get real BP, you're doing along a good path as far as i can see.

you should be warned that, once you let off your first shot, you will be forever addicted to flint.

If you own any centerfire stuff, you'll find yourself using it less and less ... to paraphrase Yoda:

"Once rocks banged have you, forever will they control your range time..."

good luck!

You will need to modify the breech scraper if it is a square one. Your GPR has an oval breech. Sure would be nice if someone made a breech scraper that actually matches these. In the interim use an 10/32 male to 8/32 female adaptor and use a 38 caliber brush with a patch on it to clean the breech.
