Bob
I am a log procurement manager for a large mill here in Va and originally from Pa and have been in the log / lumber industry for 30 plus years.
From the picture of the wood you posted for the inlay it is neither poplar. nor white oak , nor aspen. as has been suggested.
You said it it a hard dense wood and heavy...... AlL of these are NOT consistant with poplar or aspen .
The wood is not white or red oak nor any other kind of oak either.
What wood you used for the inlay is Red Maple more commonly called Soft Maple.
Don't let the name soft maple confuse you. It is called soft because it is of a more softer texture than Sugar Maple more comonly known as Hard Maple.
Soft Maple is very hard espically after it has been kiln dried. You will bend a nail being pound into maple or oak and poplar can nailed into like hemlock or pine with no problem.
Poplar and aspen and basswood are all soft even after haveing been kiln dried.
Most curly maple is of the Soft Maple species. It is more common than curley hard maple and in fact as a general rule has more figure or curl in it than Currly Hard Maple.

Hope this helps you in understanding what wood you are working with.

yes it will thanks very much ....i guess we were all wrong ...............bob
