I was wondering, do you work with the scouts at all? I plan on traveling to Sweden in 2011 for the World Jamboree. I was wondering if Muzzleloading and Blacksmithing were popular with the scouts there.

Hi Arthur!
I´m afraid i never had any personal contact with the scouts, however I have had friends that were scouts.
My guess(as unqualified as it is) would be that: Officially the scout movement in Sweden will say that they are not interested in muzzle loading weapons, but that they are very interested in blacksmithing, especially the parts that matter improvised tools and techniques to forge or repair equipment.

However, the scouts themselves (not the organization), would probably like the idea of blackpowder-shooting, it kind of goes hand in hand with survival, outdoor living, hunting and so forth.

Perhaps you can persuade them, to let you introduce them to the art of muzzle loading.

If you intend (entend?) to do so, this is what you need to know:

-Original weapons made before 1890, which does NOT require gas-sealed ammunition (free translation), is license free (muzzleloaders are, as long as they’re prior 1890)!
-All black powder hunting is prohibited.
-Black powder is license free, unless used for fireworks. However you need a license to store it.
-Shooting outside a shooting range (which usually demand that you are a member) is prohibited, unless given special permit.
-Muzzleloaders are often cheaper to buy here, then to bring in to the country. 80$ and up. Hard to find tho!
-All laws can be set aside, if you apply for a permit. This should be done as soon as possible, since all such commissions take time!

If you want to teach blackpowdershooting to our scouts 2011, then you should start applying for permits now, and do it together with the scout movement.

If you give me the specifics on where in Sweden the world jamboree will be, I’ll help you find contact information, for getting appropriate permits.

Also speak to the Swedish scout movement, to find out how they feel about this. You´ll have to be like honey, sweet on the tounge now, and not rush to the head until later.

But I think the boys and girls would love it!

I´ll help you if I can!

Best of luck: Aeon
