I just cant figure this out, I need help. I want to make either a full rod or a handle to go on existing rods with a spring that rates at 35 pounds, so you can consistantly ram the ball everytime, I know some one had them for sale before but I never seen one. Any one have an idea how the inside of this would work ?, or look. Should the spring set off a click to let you know when, or maybe a button that pops up at 35 pounds or what ?, I have the machines to make them if I can just figure it out.

Don't know if the interest is as much the technical aspects of such a project, or just the desire to have consistent pressure.

If it's literally only the concistency rather than building the widget too, I wonder if an alternative would be to somehow settle on a satisfactory amount of pressure then just mark the ramrod to go to the same depth each time?

I am wondering now, I read in my Black powder book, that 35 pounds was good, Then just now I read a post on here to just put the ball on the powder and not scrunch the powder.
So here is another topic..LOL..How much pressure if any are you guys using to seat the ball ?..... I realize every gun is different. Just looking for in general type answer.

I've belonged to the "scrunch" club for a lot of years now, accuracy is excellent, so I guess I'll go by the old saying:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Use a fish scale. After you've rammed the charge down, attach the scale to the end of the rod and slowly pull down until you reach 35lb. How you attach the scale to your rod is up to you.

You could buy a KaDooty if you could find one.

KaDooty (tm) was marketed for several years but I think they are out of business now. I haven't seen one of their ads for a long time.

This was a spring loaded ramrod which must have been adjustable because their ad says: "With KaDooty (tm) you can compress your powder to the optimum level of 40 to 90 pounds every time you load no matter what firearm, no matter what powder, ...." This was supposed to give the user an edge on those who didn't have the device.

Are there any KaDooty owners here who can tell us more about it?

I think this may work for a homemade version of the KaDooty...

To set the outside of the compression tube, simply place the ramrod-compression on a bathroom scale, (zero the scale with them on it) Place the ramrod in the compression unit and compress until the scale reads 35 pounds...

Have a second person mark the outside of the tube where the pointer stops...

To use, just place over the extra long ramrod and compress until the pointer reaches the 35 lbs. mark... :winking:

HOLY KADOOTY BATMAN !!!!!!!
thats what i was looking for......LOL......I will tinker with it this weekend, see what i can come up with. Thanks for all the replies on this one.

Musketman, you are gosh darn AMAZING!!!!!!. Are you related to that t.v. guy, you know , the guy who could make a nuclear reactor using only a pen knife, string, and a piece of gum ? Didn't his name start with M also ?

Brilliant MM.
BUT!
There is an easier way to experiment with ram rod pressure and you likely already have the equipment.
Lay your bathroom scale on the ground with the weight of the charged rifle taken into consid3ration.
Apply pressure to the ram rod on the charged rilfe till you add 35 pounds to the weight of the laoded rifle with rod on the scale.
Elementary my dear chap!

I have seen bench gun shooters use spring loaded ram rods, in an effort to get each load the same. These are the only shooters I have seen do this.

I was using the bathroom scale till it broke, was stopping at 35 lbs.
BUT after reading that post under percussion I am having second thoughts now about this spring rod and pressure all together.
I just went out and shot 10 balls with no pressure, I stopped when the rod stopped soon as it touched the powder, I slid it down the barrel one continous moderate motion till it hit the powder , no scrunch this time. And the group shrank by almost half. This group is darn small now, at 50 yards it is 1-2 inches now. probly as good as it will get. But I am still struck with the gadget bug, not looking to change or add to the muzzle loader, just pure and simple gadets for fun.

I have a couple of em made out of zebco fish scales. The ones with the spring inside.i cut them close to the T-handel an wraped sum tape around em.slips right over a ramrod and is about 4 inches long. One bottoms out at 28 lbs the other is 40 i think.
I used em fer a spell mostly to try a consistant seat of the ball on the powder. For me 25 lbs seems like plenty.Thats about all it takes to scrunch the powder down good.
I dont use em any more an after reading the replys here i got my ramrod out an put it on the bathroom scales.Gave it my what i felt was my regular powder scrunch,or what i felt the pressure i usally used.Did it several time an it came up right at 25 lbs each time.
I have to think there is some point where the powder aint gonna squeeze no more, then the ball is gonna take the pressure.
There was sumone on another board that said he could reduce his load by 10gr with a heavy compression of the powder an hit the same spot at the same yards. If i remember right he was pushin around 80lbs of pressure. As compared to the lighter pressure, which i cant remember what it was.
The gpr likes 25 pounds on the ball, the modern junker i had, that i got rid of liked 20lbs shooten the new fangled bullets. When i went much higher on the pressure it did shoot higher but the groups also opened up.Hmm probably could have reduced the load a bit an saved some powder an put more of a squeeze on er?
Any ways im just a powder scruncher now also an my scrunch seems to be 25 lbs. :results:

I know, but Harpman required a gadget to load with, its hard to lug a bathroom scale along in the woods during a deer hunt for reloading...

On the other hand, the deer wont run far 'cus their sides be hurting from laughing too hard...
