I started out with some gasket material that I had left over from some work on an old tractor. When that ran out I started usin' orange juice cartons. :v

Hi there, there is no special material, all it has to do is stop the shot from slumping, as this will give you an uneven shot patern. The size, just wider than the bore size and the thickess, thick enough to stay in the barrel (but not too thick) about 180 GSM glossy paper works well.

often, you can find a [modern metalic pistol/rifle] case that will be real close to the diameter you desire for the wad, and use that as a punch. the are a lot of 40, 45, and more reently, 50 cal modern stuff out there that will work. for bigger stuff like 54, 58 ect, try rifle cases. this is the poor mans ways but works.

Hi there, unless you have access to a lath or some who has it's not worth the bother. My repro shotguns are 12g. To make my wads I use a 20mm wad punch (from any good engineering shop),the material I use is carpet felt, which I then put in little metal tudes (less than 14gauge)they are then dipped in an old chip frier which has a 50/50 mix of bees wax and vegitable lard, I have used animal lard but that can go rancid. You may have to alter the preportions depending on the weather temp. For the heavy card I use a 19mm punch, I use 1/8th + card and a thin 180 GSM over shot card cut with the same 19mm punch. My clay target load goes like this:- using equal volume of FFF powder and shot (No 7 for flint and No9 for perc) 1 & 1/4oz of shot. The load goes like this, powder, thick card, waxed felt, thick card, shot, thin over shot card. The cards are not a tight fit as the waxed felt does the sealing, the thick cards only protect the felt. Please remember all shotguns will shoot slightly differently as well as the shooter behind the gun, so you will have to spend time on the patern board. Another note, both thick cards and felt are put down the barrel in one go. I hope this helps, happy shooting.

I used to make them out of cerial boxes, pop tart boxes, etc. Then I got to where I would rather shoot more than make them. I can but about 1000 for something like $7. If you ever spent a night making them and then realized you only made about 200 and your hands now hurt, you would buy them too. :winking:

Thanks everybody for the replys. I just found a steel punch (0.075") for $3 that should work for my 12 ga.

I'll start doing some experiments ASAP as turkey season is fast approching (30th) and it's a new barrel that I need to work up a load for and pattern. Loading will be a bit of a challenge as it's an extra full choke (0.690).

Had a nice gobbler and a hen right outside by my deck the last two mornings.

In my 28 ga I use cereal boxes for overshot cards and heavier packing slip carboard for over powder wads with a wad made of leather scrap glued on to it. they work amazingly well and the scap i use is too small to be used for anything else.
