I have heard of hunters doing a honey burn to attrack bear. Does anyone know how it is done?
Also would making a candle and adding honey to the wax amount to the same thing when you burn the candle?
Thankx Fred

Get a can of Sterno, that jelleyed alcohol stuff
that they use for food warmers ,a small can to put the honey in & a larger can to put the can of honey on top of & the sterno under.
You will need to put several large holes in the larger can for combustion air & a pair of gloves would be realy handy when you want to stop, almost forgot about the glove part it's been a long time
over 15 years, make that heavy gloves.
good luck

OH don't forget some matches

Would a "honey-burn" work? In his book Black Bears, Bob McGuire recommends several techniques for attracting quick bait hits. The best results are reportedly obtained by burning honey. I had tossed a quart jar of the stuff along with a small sterno stove in my duffel bag when packing for the hunt. These items went into my backpack as I prepared to leave for my last stand.

It was 4:30 when I reached my site. I set up the small stove on top of the bait drum, poured a generous amount of honey into the coffee can, lit the sterno and climbed quietly into my tree. Soon, I could see the heat waves coming from the sterno, and in a few minutes I caught the pungent aroma of the burning honey. It began to foam and bubble as it reached the boiling point and soon rose toward the top of the can. It boiled over the top, ran down the sides and made a sweet mess all over the top of the drum. Perfect! A little while later the sterno went out.

This story relates he positioned himself "300 yards upwind" from the local dump. Great outdoor adventure. :shake: I'm sure he didn't have the taxidermist mount the bear with his head in a trash-bag. :haha:

I've read it works, but don't add a new smell to the area if you only have a week or so to hunt. If it's a guided hunt with, say fryer grease and donuts, smear that around (NOT on you! except boots to hide your scent). The thought is to "blend-in" smell wise... Good luck! As usual, we'll expect pics.

It may be a little late, but for future referrence try a product by James Valley called SweetTooth! Its awesome for burns, produces way more smoke than straight honey and has a strong sweet smell! A cheap burning device involves a candle, a soup can, and a pop can! Set the candle in the soup can, then cut down the pop can and bend tabs over to hold it along the rail of the soup can! Set it so that its about 1/4" above candle flame! Pour your sweettooth or whatever in there and get in the stand! Oh yeah, light candle before placing the pop can in there and work fast!

I almost started a forest fire using the bacon burn, since quit using any flame while bear hunting....

This reminded me of the pic on the BarenJaeger liquor bottle. Just had to laugh a lil.
Had that vision of you sitting behind that bush and waiting for the bear to step into the trap to get at that smoking honey bait. :rotf:

I've never had a desire to hunt for bear. I tasted it once, and it was crappy.

Did I get some bad bear?

Mr. Capper,
In our experience, the quality/taste of Bear meat is directly affected by how well the meat was cared for in the field and what they have been feeding on.
Hard to beat the meat of animal that has been feasting on blueberries for a couple of days, imho.
Best Wishes
