I now own a Remington style .36 caliber Lyman revolver with a 6 3/8" barrel. How do I design a loading stand for it, or are there plans available to build it. I'd rather get some good advice than just wing it and maybe not provide sufficient support at some critical point. Thanks folks!

Do you want a stand to hold the revolver while you load the cylinder in the gun using the loading lever or a stand to hold and load the cylinder out of the gun? Either one is quite simple and can be built from photos and a few easy measurements.

I had thought of a stand to hold the revolver, but hadn't considered one to just load the cylinder. Is loading one way superior to loading the other way?

Here's a picture showing two little folding loading stands I made.
One is for a Colt frame gun and the other is for a Remington frame gun.

In use, the support is swung upward like the one at the top.
With the barrel pointed heavenwards, the heel of the butt grip fits into a notch on the lower board. (It has a small block to keep it from jumping out when the loading lever is being pushed down.)

The shape of the cradle that supports the frame is the only real difference between the two stands and its size and shape were determined by a bit of "trial and error" fitting.

Once it fit the rear of the frame I made it a little larger and then applied some green felt to it by using a contact cement like Pliobond.

Because the hinge allows them to fold flat, they don't take up much room in my shooting box.

The only improvement I might have made would be to make the bottom board a bit wider but even as it is, it does a good job of holding the gun while I'm loading it.

I have a few different plans I grabbed from here and there PM me your email and I will send them to you they are PDF fiked

Zonie,

I would be interested is seeing those loading stand plans. If you don't mind would you please email them to me.

Thanks,

Sorry but there are no drawings of the stands I made.

Although I used a piece of walnut to build these, any wood will do. Even a piece of pine or plywood.

The base is made out of a piece of wood that measures 3/4" thick X 3 1/2" wide X 8" long.

The upright measures 3/4" thick X 2 1/4" wide X 2 5/8 tall.

The small stop block that helps keep the grip butt in the notch on the base is about 5/16" thick X 7/16" wide X 1 5/16" long. It is glued in place using a regular carpenters glue.

The hinge was bought at Ace Hardware but Home Depot and similar stores carry a wide assortment.

I used a fancy brass plated hinge shown in the link but a plain old flat 2 inch cabinet hinge would do nicely.

I made one like Zonie's except I used two dowels fixed in the upright piece and fitting into holes in the base.
