How do I use a Tinder/Fire Tube?

I tried again last night with different steels that I had and the better the steel the easier it was to catch the 1/2" batting. One steel I have will catch a wide piece of char cloth easy (not many hot sparks) but was difficult to work on the tinder tube. My other 3 strikers worked fine, I was able to get it to catch 4 times in a row.
