how do you fellas that shoot flintlocks carry your priming horns, hanging from your neck or your bag or just loose in your bag????

I don't use a primimg horn. Since I try to emulate my forefathers I got rid of it. I prime from my main horn using 3F only for everything.

Tethered in a shirt pocket...

When I did carry a priming horn - I would have it in my shooting bag.
Like the post prior - I now prime from my main horn weather I'm using 2 or 3f Goex.

I stuff mine into a Pocket most times. One other one I have I tie it onto my self somewheres.

Mark,
He didn't ask if you used a Priming Horn. You musta got confused.Glad I could help.

I used to just sling it over my shoulder like the other. It was really bulky and awkward to carry two horns and a shooting bag,so now i do like the other two mentioned and just carry one horn of 2f or 3f and prime from that.

Ok, I carried it to the woods, and left it there in the weeds. :v

Musta been heavy you couldn't lugg it home....Here's mine...

They both fit nicely in the palm of my hand. That way I still have room enough for my short starter...
But that's an entirely differant ball of wax.

Kind of the reason I like a flat priming horn. It fits nicely in pocket or bag. Each to his own, I prefer not to have it hanging outside on the bag strap or around the neck. Too many things clanging and rattling around. Depending where you read, like Madison Grant's books on "Powder Horns and Their Architecture" or his book "The Kentucky Rifle Hunting Pouch", there are pictures of old original priming horns.

Mark,

I for one understood your post, some do not and that is ok. I threw my primer out a few years ago too. I opt for the more historically accurate method, priming from the main horn.

Take care,

ThomasR.

I have a flat horn that Soggy made for me. It's so nice, I carry it in my shooting bag, and leave the big ol' cow horn at home. I did have to modify the spout though. I don't care if'n it's PC, or not. It's a gift from a pal. :v

I was at a very High Dollar auction a few years back. They had some very fine flinters, rifles and pistols. Among the other items were 6 original priming horns.

i carry my priming horn, vent hole pick, little brush, and nipple wrench on a lanyard around my neck. keeps everything handy and when I am afield i tuck the necklace thinger into the pocket of my jacket. makes no noise and i have everything in my reach. PC, for my period anyway. :haha:

What are often refered to as priming horns by modern sources are actually day horns, or for use with pistol sets. Madison Grant was a wonderful guy. Be careful about using his books as a source of documentation.

Carrying a very small priming horn inside your hunting pouch, at least keeps it out of sight and out of the way. If being historically accurate isn't a consideration then consider one of those little brass things with a plunger spout you can wear around your neck and inside you shirt. I didn't mean to derail the thread, I was just offering advise.

I guess most people would call my flat horn a priming horn, but when hunting, big game or squirrels this is my main powder horn, and where I carry it.

Now when I use my larger bag and horn, for shoots or woods walks I leave this at home. Unless ofcourse I'm shooting my .32 :v

When target shooting I carry it in my bag. When I am hunting I just stick it in a pocket. A lot of people I know carry theirs on a thong around their neck. Myself I don't like a lot of stuff hanging off my neck (probably was hung in another life), so prefer to carry it in the bag.

I was just at a shoot and saw a guy with a priming horn that had a belt hook on it. he just clipped it on the side of his bag.

It seems you know more than Madison Grant, or anyone else. Why do you waste time writing for free on this forum? Write books make bucks. :rotf:
