I purchased this one by Scott & Cathy Sibley from TOTW. It has period correct engraving, but the carving of the horn neck is fancy.

It's gets pricey.

I can't buy everything myself at once. It's an everything hunting budget.

I had a shopping list.. that list is gone because a beagle got thrown in there.

I try to use the tax return for hunting.

How do you like your horns? Heavily embellished with scrimshaw , just a bit of scrimshaw or plain and simple.
I'm getting ready to build a few and was curious how folks prefer theirs.
For me it depends on the rifle you are pairing it to. For my plain rifles I have plain horns and for my fancy rifles I have scrimshaw horns.

Lots of informative replies and great horns.
Reading the replies and seeing the different horns gives one plenty to think about in horn design. ,👍

I have been wanting to make a set of Flat Horns for the Bag with some slight imbellishment and tint it on the orange/brown shade to give it some patina .

A paste made from rust dust and water brushed on a warm horn should give you what you want if I read you correctly.
Thank you so much Pratt for the tip I will mix this per your instructions and it should give me the look I want to achieve, Thank you again…

Heavy on the rust. Make it a paste and let it sit for a few hours. Be certain to break the slick surface with a 220 grit paper first. Let me know how it goes for you. Remember it should be a warm to hot horn and use dry heat..

Thanks for all the info, I’ll warn them up with my heat gun and lightly sand with 220 this should give me that weathered orangey brown look that will make the black scrimshaw stand out.

I bought a beautiful horn at a Pirate Festival that was exquisitely etched with Pirate themed vignettes; would love to know who made it! One of my favorites, the etching looked as though done with point of a pin, it's that detailed. Found a totally plain horn at an auction that appeared to be actually old, but it had a coating of coloring and now seems to be maybe modern, but nice in it's own un-adorned right. I like 'em all!

I had an old rusty three inch steel pipe about four feet long and I took an old mower blade and scratched up and down and caught the dusty rust on to an opened up trash bag and all total I think there is about a little under 1/3 of a cup, that will do the job when mixed with water for the horn stain and a lot to spare.
