Believe it or not some folks I have made horns for wanted a medium sized flat horn. Plain and no scrim.
Nice work!I like scrimshaw one of my builds . The inscription says old bear on each end and old bear in Sue in the center.View attachment 321704View attachment 321705
For me it depends on the rifle you are pairing it to. For my plain rifles I have plain horns and for my fancy rifles I have scrimshaw horns. How do you like your horns? Heavily embellished with scrimshaw , just a bit of scrimshaw or plain and simple.
I'm getting ready to build a few and was curious how folks prefer theirs.
Up close you can see the "patchwork" but step back a few feet and you see a speckled horn. One if mine even has some JB Weld filling up the "bug" holes. It gives it that speckled look. But hey, the horn serves it's purpose.
Thank you so much Pratt for the tip I will mix this per your instructions and it should give me the look I want to achieve, Thank you again…A paste made from rust dust and water brushed on a warm horn should give you what you want if I read you correctly.
Thanks for all the info, I’ll warn them up with my heat gun and lightly sand with 220 this should give me that weathered orangey brown look that will make the black scrimshaw stand out.Heavy on the rust. Make it a paste and let it sit for a few hours. Be certain to break the slick surface with a 220 grit paper first. Let me know how it goes for you. Remember it should be a warm to hot horn and use dry heat..
How does one aquire rust dust? I'm guessing wire brush off a piece of rusty metal.A paste made from rust dust and water brushed on a warm horn should give you what you want if I read you correctly.
