when measuring patch thickness do you press hard on the caliper or you just simply squeze gently again the fabric....

Mike: Since the fabric is going to change dimension a bit after its washed to remove the " Sizing ", from it, so that it will absorb the lube, or oil you put on it, just run the caliper down on the fabric enough so that you can still tug and pull the fabric out of the jaws of the caliper, and take your measurment. Measure to the nearest thousandth of an inch, and don't worry about anything smaller than that. You can squeeze fabric down to almost nothing, on the dial, but there is no point in doing so. Its fabric, and not paper, or something more solid.

I just gently bring the jaws together until a natural sort of stop occurs...I don't compress the fabric.

What taught me to do it that way was to mic a few patches from bags of patches that were already stamped by TC or Oxyoke as .010", .015", .018", etc...and I would get those same readings with that approach so I assumed that was the correct way to do it.

Practice measuring with a feeler guage with your mics. You will get a "feel" for the correct amount of drag as you pull the feeler guage out of the mic. Then you can measure cloth or whatever.

I use a Mic it has a clutch screw when it contacts the cloth the screw will start slipping. At that point you should be able to pull the cloth out of the jaws. Then you can take a reading. Make sure you are getting 100% cotton cloth and a tight weave like 49 Drill pocket liner.

my mic has a rachet dial on it, as i tigthen the mic on the fabric it stops it as the mic reaches the ticking and i can't tighten it no more :v .............bob
