Scheutzen branded as Elephant??

I don't think that was ever the case. Pretty sure it always came out of the Wano plant whereas Elephant came out of Brazil.
He's correct. Elephant was a South American powder and Schuetzen is from Germany. Elephant is far dirtier than Schuetzen, but for several years about the late 1990's, it was just about the only powder available and kept us shooting. It was still easier to ignite than Pyrodex.

I started with 1lb of 2F Goex, the shop near me carries Scheutzen, I've been shooting their 3F since. I didn't notice a difference at the time of the switch. now that I'm dialed in and worked out a ball, patch, lube combo, and a load of 3f Scheutzen, it would be interesting to work up a load with Goex and see which I like better.

I have no problems with Schuetzen and it's no dirtier than Goex. I prefer Schuetzen because they support youth black powder programs while Goex does not. So unless and until Goex changes their policy in that regard, I'll never use it promote it. So keep that in mind when reading threads about declining black powder shooting.
While I like the idea that WANO supports youth programs, I still always default back to American made products if I can.

I get that BUT don't go complaining about no youth getting into black powder shooting sports

You're probably correct @longcruise. Elephant brand disappeared in Vermont and Schuetzen showed up. Muzzleloaders at the annual Winter Biathlon in VT said it was Elephant powder with a new name back in about 2004/2005 and since I was fairly new at flintlocks I presumed they knew.

The part about fouling with blank loads (powder only) at reenactments was very true though, but fouling with a patched ball is much different than fouling using powder only. Shooting a patched ball is much cleaner than firing a blank charge. Additionally, I use Stumpy's Moose Snot as my patch lube and it effectively cleans the fouling from the last shot when you seat the next one as long as I use enough of it, so it actually wouldn't be much of a problem for me. It works so well I never have to make a cleaning wipe between shots. I never used Schuetzen for either target practice or to hunt with, so I can't speak to its performance there.
